Equals: See Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult in clip from new film
Equals, a sci-fi tale starring Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult, premiered Saturday at the Venice Film Festival. As the first reactions begin to trickle out, a new clip from the film has also debuted online.
Directed by Drake Doremus, Equals tells of a futuristic society called The Collective, comprised of humans who no longer feel emotion. One of the inhabitants, Silas (Hoult), begins to contract SOS (“Switched-On-Syndrome”), a disease that makes people feel depression, sensitivity, fear, and love. Though he’s supposed to go to The Den, where those with the disease go to die, he realizes there’s someone else who knows what he’s going through.
That person is Nia (Stewart), and this clip from the film (via Indiewire) depicts a silent interaction between the two.
“One thing we talked about endlessly was: Do we still exist if love doesn’t exist? Could we live without it?” Stewart said during the press conference in Venice. “Probably not. If you don’t have passions, maybe not for another person. But passion, curiosity — that’s what keeps us going.”
