Hunter Schafer is describing what her breakup from Dominic Fike looked like.

During an interview with Alex Cooper for Call Her Daddy, the Euphoria star, 25, opened up about her love life and revealed what went down when her last relationship ended. Schafer said when she and Fike, 28, realized they were not going to last as a couple back in July 2023, they made the decision to split, even though it was difficult.

“That breakup was mutually agreed upon,” she explained. “And it was one of the cleaner breakups I've had, like we both recognize that this is not working, and we can't do this. We gotta go our own separate ways. It was a clean parting, and he has a lot to work on, and I also have a lot to work on.”

“I think that's also why I'm in this era of, like, I’ve got to figure my s--- out,” she continued. “Because we had a really good thing, but there were things in our own selves that had nothing to do with each other that kept coming up in the way of the relationship.”

Knowing the relationship had to end despite loving one another was difficult for Schafer. She said the misconception that they had a “messy” breakup after the singer made comments saying “I just decided to be alone for a while” in an interview last year couldn’t be farther from the truth.

“It was so, so hard because we really loved each other,” she shared. “He's a really special person, and I love his soul and everything.”

When it comes to dating in the public eye, Schafer, who is a transgender woman, said constant judgment was another new challenge she had to face with Fike. In the future, she said she may keep her personal life more private.

“My last relationship was my first public relationship,” she said. “I don't know if I'll ever do it again. At some point when you're doing it, it gets just too hard. I mean, you can try to hide, but, like, whatever. But I've also come to this point just with fame in general where people are gonna say what they're gonna say, and I really don't give a s---.”

Schafer offered the example that “I get called a man hundreds of times on the internet every single day,” going on to praise Fike for being so accepting of her, especially as her first cisgender boyfriend.

“What was so amazing about my ex-boyfriend was from the get go, he saw me exactly for who I was, which is amazing,” she said.

Thinking back to who she has dated in the past, the Cuckoo actress recalled her first girlfriend — another trans woman — helping her understand what it felt like to truly be seen.

“I'm really thankful that I started out with other trans people because being trans or having trans people in your life, there's a lens that you sort of acquire, and it's something that ignorant people who have no idea how to how to engage with trans people or think about trans people, they don't have the lens that allows them to see whatever person as the gender that they are presenting as or whatever,” she explained. “And this is a lens that you acquire as you spend more time with trans people.”

Schafer and Fike first confirmed their romance in February 2022 when they posted a photo kissing. They met on set of Euphoria the year prior, eventually playing love interests.

After announcing the split in Summer 2023, Fike told Apple Music's Zane Lowe that he's "done being in relationships right now" due to his struggle with codependency. Still, he said he was hopeful about reuniting with his ex for season 3 of Euphoria, which is slated to premiere in 2025.

"I think it'll be fine. We're all adults, kind of. I'm trying," Fike said.
