Why Stormi? Expert weighs in on Kylie Jenner's retro baby name
What’s in a name? Twitter has been buzzing ever since Kylie Jenner announced her baby girl’s name: Stormi, later updating it to Stormi Webster.
Stormi is the first child for Jenner, 20, and her boyfriend, rapper Travis Scott, whose legal name is Jacques Webster. It’s unclear what Stormi’s middle name is, but regardless, people have a lot of feelings about the whole thing.
Yahoo Entertainment contacted an expert who weighed in on the “surprisingly retro name choice.”
“Stormi peaked in popularity before Kylie Jenner was even born,” Laura Wattenberg, author of The Baby Name Wizard, explains.” The name Stormy, in all its spellings, first became popular in the same ’60s-’70s wave as names like Misty, Sunny, and Holly. Stormy, in particular, took off after the 1968 hit song ‘Stormy.’”
“Stormy” is the popular song by Classics IV. Wattenberg notes the “i” in Stormi is “also typical of the ’60s-’70s name era.” She adds, “Today that style of name has taken a back seat, as expectant parents focus on the fresh and new.”
Stormi had a resurgence in the early ’90s and fits in well with some of the names Kylie’s sisters have chosen for their children. Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick’s three kids — Mason, Penelope, and Reign — have a vintage feel, while Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have gone more modern with North, Saint, and Chicago. Rob Kardashian’s little girl, Dream, has a name that tends to lean modern as well.
“The name ‘Storm,’ rather than ‘Stormi,’ would be a natural match for the stark modern style of girls’ names like North and Dream,” Wattenberg explains. “But there’s no reason to expect them to have the same taste in names. And in today’s ever-bolder name climate, reaching back a generation is, in a way, the most unexpected move of all.”
Stormi has the stamp of approval from Kylie’s famous family.
