‘Fight Club’ Returns: First Look At Chuck Palahniuk Graphic Novel – Trailer & Artwork
EXCLUSIVE: This year marks the 20th anniversary of David Fincher’s Fight Club, the malevolent masterpiece that adapted Chuck Palahniuk’s 1996 novel and made a generational cult hero out of two-fisted Tyler Durden, the subversive soap salesman portrayed by Brad Pitt.
Now Palahniuk is reviving Durden with the scabby and surreal Fight Club 3, a sequel written as a graphic novel for Dark Horse Entertainment, the Oregon-based publisher of Hellboy, 300, Sin City and The Mask. The high-profile project will be published first as a 12-issue “maxi-series” that begins when issue No. 1 hits stores on January 30.
Deadline readers won’t need to wait that long. Today you can watch the Dark Horse-produced trailer (making its exclusive debut here, at the top of this post) and read a sordid seven-page excerpt from issue No.1 (at the bottom of this post) that impressively showcases the storytelling prowess of Eisner Award-winning artist Cameron Stewart.
Dark Horse also published the Palahniuk’s Fight Club 2: The Tranquility Gambit, the 2015 graphic novel that first revived Durden along with the unnamed narrator of the original Fight Club (the character portrayed in the film by Edward Norton) and Marla (Helena Bonham-Carter’s role). All three characters appear in the new story.
The Fight Club 3 synopsis from Dark Horse: “Marla, her first son, and her husband — the unnamed narrator in the novel, who now goes by Balthazar — live in a run-down motel in a sketchy neighborhood. In the Fight Club 2 graphic novel, Tyler transformed ‘Project Mayhem’ into ‘Rize or Die.’ Now, a new group has implemented a ruthless and deviant plan to fine-tune mankind, leading Balthazar to forge an unlikely alliance…with Tyler Durden.”
Palahniuk says the new installment to his renegade saga is centered on the hazards of a volatile truce. “Fight Club 3 is about what happens when you need to team up with your enemy,” the New York Times bestselling author said. “And the situation is even more complicated here, given Tyler Durden and Balthazar’s unique relationship. And, yes, bodily fluids will be exchanged.”
