Film Hair and Makeup panel roundtable: ‘Emilia Pérez,’ ‘Gladiator II,’ ‘Sasquatch Sunset’
Makeup department head Julia Floch-Carbonel (“Emilia Pérez”), makeup designer Jana Carboni and hair designer Giuliano Mariano (“Gladiator II”), and makeup department head Steve Newburn (“Sasquatch Sunset”) recently joined Gold Derby for our Film Hair and Makeup panel roundtable, in which they discussed the intricacies of collaborating with their directors. “What’s interesting with him is, everything is going to be questioned — the color, the texture, everything,” Floch-Carbonel says about her director Jacques Audiard. “You think you’ve locked an answer, but the next question will probably reload the answer before. It’s a really circular way of thinking and working, so it’s moving all the time. You have to go with the flow and it’s really fascinating in so many ways. Tiring, too, but fascinating.” The “Emilia Pérez” artisan adds, “It was the most challenging and the most interesting thing that I’ve done, so I’m really happy.”

Referencing her “Gladiator II” boss Ridley Scott, Carboni notes, “Specifically with Ridley, we always talk through images, which is good fun.” As she explains, “We talk the same language, in a way. I learned from him not to be too academic, because my background was very academic and about perfection … You can do your homework, but then you have to let it go and follow your instinct and your vision and make your heart beat. He’s not boring. He loves the fun. He’s not scared about something being over the top.”

Mariano agrees with Carboni and says of Scott, “He’s very aesthetic. He loves to push a lot. He doesn’t like the same thing, so even if we did a period movie, in some characters he likes them not to be too academic, and going naturally a bit more crazy, a bit more fun.” The hair designer comes from a “street” background where things had to always be “exact,” but now, “I actually like to play around a little bit with each character.”
Finally, Newburn explains how “sometimes for this kind of work, it can be difficult with the back and forth with the director.” However, “Sasquatch Sunset” is an “exception” because Nathan Zellner is one of the actors as well as a co-director with his brother David Zellner. The makeup department head states, “We came up with some basic Photoshops right off the first discussion,” and everyone was on the same wavelength. “It couldn’t have been any easier, honestly, and it was just kind of going through the tiny details of it and how we bring out each of these personalities that we have.”
“Emilia Pérez” opened in theaters on Nov. 1 and is now streaming on Netflix. “Gladiator II” opened in theaters on Nov. 22. “Sasquatch Sunset” opened in theaters on April 12 and is now streaming on Paramount+.
