Forbes' 30 Under 30 list includes Memphis singer-songwriter Julien Baker
A Memphis-area native and Grammy-nominated musician has made Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list for 2024.
Germantown-born, Bartlett-raised singer-songwriter Julien Baker was named to the 30 Under 30 Music list. Baker was included as part of indie rock super group boygenius, which also features Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus.
The 29-year-old Baker joined her 28-year-old bandmates on the list, which included other young music industry stars and movers like Latin musician Peso Pluma and rapper Ice Spice.
The recognition comes amid what’s been a big year for Baker, who launched her career as a teenager in the Memphis punk scene as part of the band Star Killers. She attended Middle Tennessee State University, but left school after the surprise success of her solo debut, “Sprained Ankle," which came out in the fall of 2015.
The acclaim for Baker’s record led to a solo deal with Matador and two more albums in 2017 and 2021. In between Baker would co-found boygenius with Bridgers and Dacus. The group released its full-length debut, "The Record," earlier this year.
Baker and boygenius recently came up big in the annual Grammy Award nominations. The group will be vying for trophies in six categories, including Album of the Year for “The Record.” boygenius was also nominated for Record of the Year, Best Rock Performance, Best Rock Song, Best Alternative Music Performance and Best Alternative Music album.
