Former CNN Anchor Miles O’Brien Has Arm Amputated

Award-winning science journalist and former CNN anchor Miles O’Brien has revealed via his blog that he recently had his arm amputated following an accident.

“I wish I had a better story to tell you about why I am typing this with one hand (and some help from Dragon Dictate),” he wrote.

After returning from a reporting trip to Japan and the Philippines, O’Brien was stacking cases when suddenly one fell on his arm. Over the next few days, his arm would swell and become increasingly painful, forcing him to to see a doctor. After requiring immediate surgery for his arm, the doctor was forced to make a judgment call, which led to the amputation.

“[The doctor] later told me it all boiled down to a choice…between a life and a limb,” O’Brien wrote.

O’Brien, who covered the U.S. space program for CNN, is now the science correspondent for PBS NewsHour.
