“Found” stars Shanola Hampton and Mark-Paul Gosselaar preview the danger Sir poses in season 2

The NBC drama’s second season will include the search for Lacey and the aftermath of Mosely & Associates finding out Gabi’s shocking secret.

Lacey Quinn, you’re in danger girl!

Season 1 of Found ended with serial kidnapper Sir (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) lying in wait at the home of law student Lacey Quinn (Gabrielle Walsh). “It picks up right from there and it just never lets off the gas until halfway through the season where it shifts into another gear,” Found star Mark-Paul Gosselaar tells Entertainment Weekly.

Found follows recovery specialist Gabi Mosely (Shanola Hampton), who was kidnapped as a child and now works with her team (who have all also been impacted by abductions, including Lacey) to find missing people who have been ignored or forgotten. Secretly, Gabi’s team — including Lacey — spent season 1 getting an assist from Gabi’s childhood kidnapper, Sir, whom she held captive in her basement. But the season ended with the serial kidnapper breaking free and going after Lacey (again).

“At the start of the season, Gabi’s worst fears have been realized,” Hampton says. “She is responsible for [what] has happened, so she’s dealing with a lot.” That includes her fractured team, whose search for Lacey is made more difficult now that they all know the truth about Sir helping them solve cases. Security expert Dhan Rana (Karan Oberoi), is “the only one that she has that is supportive” says Hampton.

Gabi will also turn to Lacey’s mother, Gina (whose casting has not yet been revealed), who will be seen in both the present and through flashbacks set after Gabi and Lacey (then known by her birth name, Bella) escape from their harrowing childhood kidnapping. “[You’ll see] what their relationship was then and is now, but there are people who have her back outside of [Mosely and Associates]. It’s really lovely,” Hampton says about the new character. “It’s fun to really see how they got to this place. She’s such a strong character and personality,” Hampton says about Lacey’s mother.

Gosselaar believes Sir wouldn’t immediately kill Lacey because “if he were to dispose of her, he questions whether Gabrielle would have a relationship with him.” He still blames Lacey for Gabi escaping captivity all those years ago. “[He believes] Gabrielle would still be with him and they’d be living out the life that he has in his head, so the hatred for Lacey is absolutely real,” Gosselaar explains. But Sir is extremely volatile, and Lacey is going to fight to escape him — so the clock is ticking for Mosely and Associates.

The only person who doesn’t know about Gabi’s crime (yet) is Detective Mark Trent (Brett Dalton), and that poses major problems for her both professionally and personally. Not only has Det. Trent gone to great lengths to show his feelings for her, but as a cop, he may feel compelled to arrest her. “There’s a point where Gabi would have to be honest with him,” Hampton says about Gabi telling him about Sir, especially since he has Lacey.

Sir’s escape also means an end to Gabi’s complex tête-à-têtes with her prisoner. “My days in the basement were my favorite days to shoot because it was a tennis match for both of us, and the theater girl in me loves that,” Hampton says of those scenes with Gosselaar. But, Sir’s new freedom created an enticing acting challenge for Gosselaar: “I knew what my boundaries were [in season 1]. It was pretty clear and defined in the basement,” he says. “Sir being outside opens a lot for the character. It expanded everything and I found myself working a lot harder, which is a good thing as an actor.”

Hampton says we’ll also meet one of Sir’s relatives this season, as the series continues to dive into the backstories of those around Gabi. “That’s what the show is designed to do,” she says. “Not only bring light to those no one is looking for, but also show the different paths that each member [of her team] has gone through to get where they are.”

Found returns for season 2 on Oct. 3 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on NBC.
