The Franchise: Filmmakers Internalize Their Panic on a ‘Set Full of Setbacks’ — Watch Trailer and Get Release Date

HBO’s upcoming comedy The Franchise is taking us behind the messy curtain of a superhero film gone wrong, and it all flies into action Sunday, Oct. 6 at 10/9c.

According to its official description, the eight-episode series “follows the crew of an unloved franchise movie fighting for their place in a savage and unruly cinematic universe. The comedy series shines a light on the secret chaos inside the world of superhero moviemaking, to ask the question — how exactly does the cinematic sausage get made? Because every f–k-up has an origin story.”

In the teaser embedded above, we see Himesh Patel’s (Station Eleven) Daniel stressed to the nines as he refers to the film as a “scrotum resting on a razor’s edge.” From there, it’s a comedy of errors as the set experiences malfunctions, crashes and fires, all while Billy Magnussen’s (Made for Love) Adam, an actor, requires a much-needed ego boost before shooting a difficult scene.

Joining Patel and Magnussen are Aya Cash (You’re the Worst), Jessica Hynes (Spaced), Lolly Adefope (Shrill), Darren Goldstein (Ozark) and Isaac Powell (American Horror Story). Recurring guest stars include Richard E. Grant (Dispatches From Elsewhere) and Daniel Brühl (The Alienist).

Sam Mendes (who directs the pilot), Pippa Harris, Nicolas Brown, Julie Pastor and Jon Brown executive-produce. Brown also serves as writer and showrunner.
