Freeform Renews ‘Black-ish’ Spinoff ‘Grown-ish’ for Season 2
Freeform has renewed the Yara Shahidi-led “Black-ish” spinoff, “Grown-ish” for a second season, the network announced on Thursday.
The half-hour comedy, which follow’s Shahidi’s “Black-ish” character as she ventures off to college, has been picked up for a 20-episode season just a few weeks after its Jan. 3 series premiere.
“Grown-ish” has proved to be a success for Freeform, scoring 1.56 million total viewers for its first episode, marking one of the cable network’s highest-rated premieres in years.

First put into development at ABC and then picked up to series at Freeform when its broadcast sister network passed, “Grown-ish” hails from ABC Signature Studios. Kenya Barris, Helen Sugland, E. Brian Dobbins, Anthony Anderson, Laurence Fishburne and Julie Bean serve as executive producers.
The announcement, made at a panel discussion featuring Barris and Shahidi at a “Freeform Summit” event in Los Angeles on Thursday, comes hours after the network announced it had given a put pilot commitment to a reboot of “Party of Five” from the original creators.
The network also scheduled the Marvel series “Cloak & Dagger” for a June 7 premiere and slated the returns of “The Bold Type” and “Famous in Love” for June 12 and April 4, respectively.
