Who Are the Chicago P.D. Season 12 New Cast Members?
On September 4, TV Insider reported that Shawn Hatosy had been cast in a recurring role on Chicago P.D. Season 12, playing Deputy Chief Charlie Reid. Look for Hatosy’s character’s first appearance in the September 25 premiere. Showrunner Gwen Sigan told TV Insider that Charlie Reid will bring a “new dynamic for the [Intelligence] unit.”
Sigan explained, “I think he sees a lot of himself in Voight and identifies quite a bit with Voight and Voight’s philosophy as a police officer, and they have a really interesting relationship that will evolve as the season goes on.”
It will be interesting to see that relationship unfold, but fans worry that Sergeant Henry “Hank” Voight might leave Chicago P.D. Is the show setting up the possibility that Reid will replace Voight in the future? Currently, there’s no indication that that’s in the plans.
Jason Beghe, who’s played Voight since the first season, told The Hollywood Reporter in March 2024 that he has no plans to leave the show. “I’ll always be a part of Chicago P.D. That, I know. I certainly have the interest,” he explained. “And I think that NBC has the interest in both the show and Voight. So, I’m not done, I have more to do, and I’m anxious to do it. I love my job. I don’t know what the end is, whether it’s Thursday or Friday, but I supposed it’ll end at some point. But right now, I feel like I have stories to tell and a job to do.”
Fans of Hatosy may know him from his other acting roles, including Six Feet Under, SEAL Team, Dexter, and Law & Order. Hatosy is best known for playing Andrew “Pope” Cody for six seasons on TNT’s crime drama series Animal Kingdom and Detective Sammy Bryant on the TNT crime drama Southland.
TVLine previously reported that Toya Turner will be a new face on Chicago P.D. as well, in the series-regular role of Kiana Cook. According to the site, Kiana is “a patrol officer who loves the adrenaline of the job and its stakes and doesn’t blink in the face of chaos.” Turner has guest starred on Chicago Med and Chicago Fire.
More: Is Tracy Spiridakos heading to FBI?
As for departures, Tracy Spiridakos’ Detective Hailey Upton ended her run with the show in the Season 11 finale. In the episode, Upton revealed she was leaving the Intelligence Unit to focus on herself and train for the FBI.
Following her Chicago P.D. exit, Spiridakos told People she would “love” to remain in the Dick Wolf universe and FBI. “I would absolutely love that,” she said. “The Dick Wolf franchise has been one of the greatest experiences of my career. The way that they work as a company is not even as a company. It’s very familial, and I feel like they’re family and friends, so I would love to be a part of their universe, for sure.”
Spiridakos also had a message for all the fans. “I want to do a really big thank you to the fans, to the ChiHards, who have really embraced me coming into the show several seasons in, and made me feel so welcome,” she said. “I’m getting emotional. Walking through Chicago, having people stop and say ‘Hi’ and ‘We love your work,’ it’s beautiful. So thank you.”
LaRoyce Hawkins, who plays Officer Kevin Atwater on Chicago P.D., shared his thoughts about how Spiridakos’ exit could impact the direction of his role in Season 12. “To be honest with you, I don’t think I’m really worried about teammates as much as I would really love to be a detective, since it doesn’t seem like we have any detectives on the unit,” he told TV Insider in July.
“Somebody should probably step up,” he added. “Somebody might deserve that role with those responsibilities, but it’s up to the powers that be, naturally.”
