Gallo’s Film/TV Briefs: Robert Kraft Returns to Performing; Arsenio Hall Lines Up Guests; James Brown Biopic Set
Robert Kraft, the former president of music at Fox who put his music career on hold for more than two decades, is returning to the stage for two shows, one in New York and one in L.A.
Kraft will perform at Joe’s Pub on Oct. 30 and Largo at the Coronet on Nov. 5. The performances coincide with the release in Japan of a five-CD boxed set of his studio albums and the never-released “Robert Kraft at the Newport Jazz Festival, Town Hall NYC, 1980.” Vivid Sounds is handling the re-release. In the U.S., Milan Records is releasing a “Best of” compilation called “Consensual Sets.” Kraft, as a solo artist and with his band the Ivory Coast, recorded for RCA, RSO and Sonic Edge Records in the 1970s and ‘80s.

In its first week, “The Arsenio Hall Show’s” musical guests will include Nas, Mac Miller, Earth, Wind & Fire and Emblem3. The new late-night syndicated talk show debuts Sept. 9 and, in its first month, will feature interviews and performances with 2 Chainz, Ice Cube, Kendrick Lamar, the Band Perry, Mayer Hawthorne and Magic Johnson. Chris McDonald is booking the musical acts.

ASCAP and the California Film Institute will host a series of music showcases at the 36th Mill Valley Film Festival from Oct. 4 to 6. The café will run at the Sweetwater Music Hall & Café in Mill Valley from 1 to 5 p.m. and will feature Cole Bonner, Bonnie & the BANG BANG, Jessie Bridges, the Family Crest, Lily Kershaw, Tyler Lyle, Midi Matilda, Jazz Mills & Jesse Plemons and Olin & the Moon.

Tate Taylor’s James Brown biopic, “Get On Up,” will be released Oct. 17, 2014. Universal Pictures announced the release date on the heels of announcing that Chadwick Boseman, who portrayed Jackie Robinson in “42,” would portray the Godfather of Soul. Taylor’s last film was “The Help.” Mick Jagger and Victoria Pearman are producing under their Jagged Films company along with Imagine Entertainment‘s Brian Grazer and Erica Huggins. Taylor’s Wyolah Films partner John Norris is executive producer as are Trish Hofmann and Peter Afterman, who manages the James Brown Estate.
