'Game of Thrones' fans are doing #TheArya online and social media is loving it

Arya Stark slayed the Night King at the end of the Battle of Winterfell and now she’s slaying social media. In the aftermath of “The Long Night” — the third episode of Game of Thrones’s final season — fans are enlisting in droves in #TheArya challenge. This new online meme features ordinary people trying out the cool-as-hell finishing move that the young assassin (played by Maisie Williams) used to take out the leader of the White Walkers, potentially earning her the status of Westeros’s promised savior as well as a well-deserved shoutout from Drake. In case you’ve somehow forgotten, in its original form, The Arya looks like this:

As countless imitators have now shown, Arya’s drop-catch-and-stab motion has other applications beyond a cataclysmic battle between the living and the undead. Proof can be found on Twitter by searching the hashtags #TheArya, #AryaChallenge and #NotToday. For example, the U.S. military was clearly taking notes for its own non-war games.

But civilians have also taken turns doing #TheArya, with and without props.

So far Maisie Williams herself hasn’t weighed in on all these would-be Aryas, but then again she’s got some serious training to do. After all, it’s only a few days until we find out whether #TheArya also works against Cersei Lannister.

Game of Thrones airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO.
