'Game of Thrones' Episode 5 photos reveal a smiling Cersei and a sad Daenerys
Why is this woman smiling? Probably because she knows she has the upper hand in the Battle of King’s Landing, which will unfold in the penultimate episode of Game of Thrones’s final season. Sure, Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow are formidable foes — they and Arya Stark just saved Westeros from a White Walker invasion, after all — but that long night left them depleted, while the twin deaths of Rhaegal and Missandei left them demoralized. Just look at this picture of a forlorn Dany to see the, uh, stark contrast in the mood of the two queens headed into the last battle for the Iron Throne. (Then again, maybe Dany just needed her usual caffeine boost.)
Her loyal (for now) advisor, Tyrion, also clearly feels the weight of the battle ahead, as well as the knowledge that Daenerys isn’t the only Targaryen in contention for the crown.
Even if the army opposing Cersei was at its freshest, a direct assault on King’s Landing is no easy task. The obstacles start with the heavy fortifications, manned by a seemingly inexhaustible army.
And in front of those walls is Golden Company commander, Harry Strickland, a mercenary conscripted into Cersei’s service by Euron Greyjoy. He showed up at King’s Landing in the Season 8 premiere, bringing his elephant-less army with him.
Speaking of the dragonkiller, he’s still watching the skies — no doubt waiting for a second shot at the last dragon in Westeros. And this time, he doesn’t plan to miss. Our dream would be for Ghost and Nymeria to make lunchmeat of him first, though.
No matter the odds, you can bet that Grey Worm will be leading the charge to his last dying breath. After all, only in death will he be reunited with Missandei, and they can spend all of their afterlife crooning “My Boo.”
While the rest of his allies prepare for battle, the forward-thinking Varys is focusing on what comes afterwards. After his foreboding conversation with Tyrion last week, Varys has already left Dany’s side and positioned himself next to Jon — no doubt whispering in his ear about the kind of ruler that Westeros really needs.
His words must not have had much impact, though, because this is definitely not the face that an eager would-be king would make.
It may come as a relief to Jon that oddsmakers like Betonline currently have him running just behind his sister, Sansa, as the most likely winner of the game of thrones. Meanwhile, Dany’s abrupt turn into “Mad Queen” territory has caused her to drop in the standings, now pulling even with Tyrion. As for who is going to end up being the Cersei-slayer, Arya and Jaime are running neck-and-neck as per their dueling prophecies. Personally, we’re putting our money on Drogon.
