Game of Thrones or the ACM Awards: Which Should You Watch?

For a long time now, Sunday nights have forced avid TV viewers to make difficult decisions. Do you DVR Mad Men or watch it live? Is it better to record True Blood or True Detective?

On April 6, fans will face another tough choice in the battle of must-see TV: the ACM Awards or Game of Thrones? This year, the country music awards show will air at 8 p.m. ET on CBS, hitting screens directly opposite the fourth season premiere of HBO’s hit fantasy series.

For lovers of both genres, deciding which event you want to see for yourself rather than hear about later will be tricky. What’s more important: Blake Shelton’s latest dig or Daenerys Targaryen’s latest power play? To help you better make that decision, PEOPLE editors Kiran Hefa and Katie Kauss are weighing in. Read on for their takes:

Cast

Kiran Hefa: With an arsenal of actors as large and varied as Game of Thrones, there’s someone for everyone on the show – eye candy included. Jon Snow (Kit Harington) is as strong as he is sensitive. Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) is practically a live-action Prince Charming. Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) is both beautiful and brutal – piss her off and there’s dragon fire in your future. Oh yes, that’s right, there are dragons. In fact, there are THREE. How many other programs can claim the same?

Katie Kauss: Shelton, Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert – oh yeah, did I mention George Strait? Need I say more? The star power at this year’s ACM Awards rivals that of the Grammys. But wait, there’s more! Merle Haggard is being honored with the Crystal Milestone Award, Stevie Nicks will be singing with Lady Antebellum and – wait for it – Shakira will be performing her new single “Medicine” with Shelton. Trisha Yearwood, Garth Brooks, LL Cool J, Chris O’Donnell, Olivia Munn – I could name-drop for days – will also be presenting. And we haven’t even gotten started on the comedy chops of hosting duo “Bluke” (Shelton and Bryan).

Suspense Factor

Kiran: The thrill of anticipating (and if you’re lucky, correctly identifying) award show winners is a hard one to beat. Truthfully, I’d normally be hard-pressed to think of an emotion that rivals the one you experience when you accurately predict The Great Gatsby as winner of the Best Production Design Oscar over Gravity, but in this instance, I can do you one better: the threat of looming death. Granted it’s not your own, but as Thrones has proven with each passing season, no one is safe (Red Wedding, anyone?) and the bloodbath could come when you least expect it. To save time, I watch the show with my hands already somewhere near my face so I’m ready to cover my mouth in horror at a moment’s notice.

Katie: Luke, Taylor, Blake, Miranda or George: we wouldn’t want to be tasked with picking the entertainer of the year! Reigning winner Bryan has had a heck of a year with two sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden (and those hip-shaking stage moves); Taylor Swift is country music’s darling; and Shelton makes us laugh every week on The Voice (and then there’s his Twitter feed). This is Lambert’s first EOTY nomination and frankly, it’s about time. And then there’s King George. Strait, the reigning CMA Awards entertainer of the year, is currently wrapping up his Cowboy Rides Away farewell tour – and oh yeah, he has 60 No. 1 singles to boot. So there! You try picking a winner – I’ll be biting my nails all night.

Costuming

: It’s been nearly three years since Prince William and Kate Middletontied the knot, and while my love of her Alexander McQueen dress has yet to fade, it does mean that my wedding inspiration Pinterest board could use an update. Cue King Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson) and his bride-to-be Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer), whose own royal wedding is set to awe Westeros and put quite the dent in the ruling family’s wealth. GoT costume designer Michele Clapton told Vanity Fair Margaery’s gown “took weeks … months even” to create, proof positive that it is sure to be as epic as the show itself.

Katie: Need I remind you about Kacey Musgraves’s amazing light-up cowboy boots from the Grammys? But it’s not all about cowboy hats and a BeDazzler (although what’s not to love about a man in a hat?). Underwood wowed on the carpet last year in a gorgeous floral gown, Lambert sparkled in gold and Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman from Little Big Town never fail to bring it on awards night. The boys, who we normally see in denim, T-shirts and plaid, usually class it up with a suit and tie, proving that they look good wearing just about anything.
