Gamers wanted: Spooky’s Game Night Round 2 Saturday
Calling all gamers! Spooky’s Game Night Round 2 is slated from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 27, at Our House Games, 1211 S. Monroe St. and gamers of all ages are invited to play.
The family-friendly event will be hosted by Jimmy Rothman of Crazy Squirrel Graphics and Stelios Stylianou of Spooky Spooky Films. This is the second time Rothman and Stylianou are teaming up to sponsor game night. The first event was in March with approximately 50 gamers in attendance.
They say they have the solution for when there’s nothing to do.
“That’s one of the reasons we started Spooky’s Game Night,” Jimmy Rothman said. “I always hear there’s nothing to do in this town. People say there’s nothing to do with their families. All they can do is go to places to eat.”
Rothman wanted to create a venue where there was something to do – play games. He said at Spooky’s Game Night all ages are welcome.
“We’ll have board games, video games and card games. There’ll be tournaments and prizes,” he said.
Patrons pay $15 admission to be eligible for “all the games you can play,” tournaments and casual play (no competition). There will be 50/50 raffles and snacks and drinks will be provided, including pizza from Lane’s Pizzeria of Maybee.
In addition to gaming, there will be a food drive benefitting Oaks of Righteousness/Oaks Village Food Pantry.
Canned goods and nonperishable food items are requested. For each item donated, a raffle ticket will be entered into a drawing to win a cloned HD Nintendo Entertainment System and a copy of Super Mario Brothers.
Rothman said he wanted to do something to help the community.
“I’ve seen the posts on Facebook of the pantries being empty and that they need food,” he said. “This isn’t the first time we’ve tried to help. We had a toy and canned food drive for IWR (Insane Wrestling Revolution). I saw how much we accumulated and so I thought we could do it at our game night and help Oaks. There’s going to be a raffle. Every canned good equals a ticket. There’s no limit. The more they bring in, the more chances they have to win.”
Stylianou, a gamer who prefers the classic video games, said the idea of running a game night is another way to offer a safe activity for youth in the area.
In October, Stylianou is hosting Spooky's Fun House in Monroe. The two-day haunted attraction will feature an umbrella room, clown hallway, fortune teller, vanity room and jack-in-the-box.
In 2022, he started sponsoring family focused events, like skating and bowling parties, as a way of promoting his business and staying involved in the community.
“Our House Games has been so accommodating by offering space and tables to make this a family-friendly environment,” Stelios Stylianou added. “They have been wonderful.”
Our House Games is a tabletop gaming store owned and operated by Kristian (Kris) Bezeau and Erika Branstetter. It features family, board, card, role playing and miniature games including gaming accessories. Customers can buy and borrow games.
Plans are in the works for Spooky’s Game Night Round 3 in the fall. Details will be posted on Crazy Squirrel Graphics’ Facebook page at www.facebook.com/CrazySquirrelGraphics and on Spooky Spooky Films’ Facebook page via tinyurl.com/SpookySpookyFilmsFB.
