Lena Dunham on 'Girls' Sex Scenes: 'I'm a Little Braver Than I Thought'
If you’re a fan of HBO’s hit comedy Girls, then you’ve probably become acquainted to watching some of the most awkward and realistic sex scenes on television. But what you may not realize is that they’re just as awkward in real life. In the video above, Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, Andrew Rannells, Alex Karpovsky, and executive producer Jenni Konner explain what goes into making the “magic” happen. (Hint: Nipple covers and “a lot of gum and mints.”)

And while it may seem like Dunham takes her clothes off with ease, think again. If there’s one thing she’s learned about herself from doing sex scenes, it’s that she’s a little braver than she thought. “It was one thing when I was doing them on Indie film sets,” she explains, “but when you step on to a set that’s fifty or a hundred professional crew members and you take your robe off, there’s a really scary moment where you wonder, ‘Are people going to greet this as what I know it to be, which is an artistic statement, or are people going to turn into something that feels vulgar or unkind?’”
As for what to expect this Sunday for the season finale, the cast teases a never-seen-on-TV-before moment.
Girls airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO.
