Glenn Close Explains Her Quirky Social Media Posts & Reveals Her Biggest Acting Inspirations
Glenn Close is many things — an acting legend, a vocal activist for women’s rights, a mom, a producers and a mental health advocate. But we’re adding Instagram comedian to her list of titles after keeping up with her hilarious social media posts over the past couple of years.
When we talked to Close at Variety’s Power of Women event in New York on May 2, the Fatal Attraction star couldn’t help but laugh at her Instagram posts which consist of everything from sporadic musings about her daily life to videos of her making funny faces into the camera.

“I don’t know I guess I get a crazy idea and I just say, well, I think this is kind of funny. Maybe a couple of people will think it’s funny,” Close told us. “Life is so challenging, you know. All the things that are being pumped into our collective nervous system are so disturbing and anxiety-making and you just want to say, ‘Let’s take a breath and do something that might make people laugh.'”
Close does occasionally use her large platform for good, sharing posts about her philanthropic work and throwing her voice behind major social justice issues from abortion rights to celebrating the LGBTQ+ community.
“There are other things that I feel very strongly,” she continued during our chat. “I’ve always shied away from being using my platform in a political way but there’s some things that you can’t deny, right? So I’m just trying to figure out how to articulate that.”
At Variety’s Power of Women event, Close was tasked with introducing one of Variety’s 2024 honorees, Law & Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay who Close told us was an “incredible” example of an artist whose work has continued to be a source of inspiration.
But Hargitay is not the only actress who has kept the veteran actress inspired throughout her lengthy career. “I get inspired all the time when I see when I see performances that really move me emotionally,” Close told us after shouting out Hollywood legend Katharine Hepburn. “You know, you see great work, it just makes you want to be better and and that will never change.”
“We’re all evolving, right? We’re evolving in our art as we hope to evolve in our life.”
