Glenn Close joins Amy Adams in Ron Howard's Netflix film 'Hillbilly Elegy'
Glenn Close is hitching a ride to Appalachia.
EW has confirmed the seven-time Oscar-nominated actress has joined Amy Adams for Ron Howard‘s Hillbilly Elegy, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker’s Netflix-bound adaptation of J.D. Vance’s memoir of the same name.
The 71-year-old will portray Mamaw, described in the film’s official synopsis as a resilient and whip-smart matriarch of a southern Ohio family. The film chronicles a young man’s journey from his small hometown to Yale Law. Just before he lands his dream job, a family crisis forces him to return home, where he must come to terms with the challenging dynamic of his family — including his volatile relationship with his addiction-riddled mother, Bev (Adams).
The Shape of Water screenwriter will adapt Vance’s book for the big screen, while Howard, Brian Grazer, and Karen Lunder will produce, with Vance and Julie Oh serving as executive producers.
Hillbilly Elegy marks yet another major project for Close after Olivia Colman pulled off a stunning Best Actress upset over The Wife star at the 2019 Oscars; In addition to the streaming feature, she will reportedly reprise her role as Norma Desmond in the film version of her Broadway musical Sunset Boulevard.
Shortly after the 2019 Oscars ceremony, Close announced she would take time off to focus on new opportunities.
“I’m now going to take it easy for a while; I’m going to read a lot; I’m going to think a lot,” Close said in an Instagram video. “I have some exciting possibilities coming up, but I think I need to rest and reboot and get into really great shape for the next phase, and then see what I’m going to do.”
A release date for Hillbilly Elegy has yet to be announced.
