Golden Globe-Winning ‘Green Book’ Co-Writer Spikes His Twitter Account After Old Anti-Muslim Post Resurfaces

It certainly has been an up-and-down week for Green Book co-screenwriter Nick Vallelonga. Days after sharing the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay, the scribe has deleted his Twitter account after an old tweet resurfaced in which he echoed then-candidate Donald Trump’s view that Muslims in New Jersey were seen celebrating when the World Trade Center towers fell on September 11, 2001.

Here’s a screengrab of Vallelonga’s post from November 2015 that stirred controversy today before it was taken down along with the rest of his Twitterisms:

Co-penned by Vallelonga — son of the film’s lead character played by Viggo Mortensen — Brian Currie and director Peter Farrelly, Green Book also won two other Globes on Sunday: Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali, who played a black jazz pianist who goes on a concert tour of the Jim Crow South in 1962. At the Academy Awards two years ago, Ali became the first Muslim to win the Best Actor Oscar. He has not commented publicly about today’s controversy.

Vallelonga’s resurfaced tweet was in support of Trump’s claim that he saw “thousands” of New Jersey Muslims celebrating the felling of the Twin Towers. In an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, Trump said; ““Hey, I watched when the World Trade Center came tumbling down. And I watched in Jersey City, New Jersey, where thousands and thousands of people were cheering as that building was coming down. Thousands of people were cheering.”

That claim since has been debunked.
