Golden Globes nominations: What happened inside the room?
On the morning of Monday, Dec. 9, 2024, the Golden Globes nominations were announced live by actors Mindy Kaling and Morris Chestnut, plus Helen Hoehne, President of Golden Globes LLC. Gold Derby was in the room where it happened tracking all of the publicists’ unfiltered reactions and spotting several behind-the-scenes secrets.
The event took place in a small ballroom inside the infamous Beverly Hilton Hotel. (The awards show itself will take place in the International Ballroom on Jan. 5, 2025.) Breakfast was served beginning at 4 a.m. PT, with ham & egg sandwiches, fresh fruits, pastries, jams, coffees, and juices available for those who arrived earlier than the 5:15 a.m. start time.

Before the announcement began, a stage manager informed everyone in attendance to be as noisy as possible. “The more alive this room feels, the more people at home will feel alive as well,” he said. Thus, there was noticeable applause after every nominee was announced. Gold Derby determined that Pamela Anderson got the biggest cheers of them all, while the following celebs also received extra love from the crowd: Ariana Grande, Zoe Salda?a, Denzel Washington, Cynthia Erivo, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Zendaya.

The audience was told to “double it up” enthusiasm-wise between part one of the announcement (the first 17 categories) and part two (the final 10), because that’s when “CBS Mornings” started taking the broadcast live.
Blooper alert: When the program started up again after the five-minute break, production “jumped the gun” a bit and announced “The Day of the Jackal” for a Best Drama Series nom before they were actually airing live, so they had to redo it. Oops!
Gold Derby chatted with Chestnut after the event, where he said it was “beyond an honor” to announce this year’s nominees. “I just get so excited for the people who are nominated,” he declared. “I know all of the hard work that goes into the craft, and there are so many projects throughout the year.” He singled out Jamie Foxx (“What Had Happened Was”) and Demi Moore (“The Substance”) as friends/former colleagues that he’s especially proud of today. And he’s really looking forward to checking out Anderson’s project, “The Last Showgirl.”
Hoehne told us, “We’re so excited about the crop of nominees. It’s a really great group of very diverse people, and many first-time nominees, which always makes me so excited. Winning a Golden Globe for the first time really changes your career.” She is “super excited” to see Nikki Glaser take the stage as a first-time host, and hopes that viewers will give her some grace. There are 334 voting members of the Golden Globes representing 85 countries from around the world, Hoehne revealed in her opening speech.
Hollywood’s party of the year will air live on CBS beginning at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT, and will also stream simultaneously on Paramount+. Comedian Nikki Glaser is serving as host of the 82nd annual Golden Globe Awards. As previously reported, Viola Davis will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award and Ted Danson will receive the Carol Burnett Award.
