'Great Lakes, Great Movies': Soo Film Festival returns Sept. 11-15
SAULT STE. MARIE — The annual Soo Film Festival returns next week with a lineup of work from filmmakers near and far.
The film festival was created with the intention of showcasing the work of independent and emerging filmmakers from the Great Lakes region. The festival has also been a way to bring movies back to downtown Sault Ste. Marie and the historic Soo Theatre, which used to show movies on a regular basis.
This year's festival will feature 57 new films in a variety of categories, including features, shorts and animation. The festival's focus remains on local filmmakers, but entry is open to participants worldwide.
"We have a tremendous selection of films for 2024 and are eager to show them off. It truly is Great Lakes, Great Movies," said festival president Jason Markstrom.

Some highlights this year will be "Yooper Frankenstein," which was filmed in Sault Ste. Marie, and "The House on the Lake," which is making its world premiere at the Soo Theatre on the third day of the festival.
The film, directed by Harrison Orwig and Ellison Winterstein, was made with a cast of Michigan actors and shot in cities like Lansing and Grand Ledge.
The movie was filmed in 2021 with a budget of less than $2,000 and follows the story of ghost hunters and priests going through a haunted house.
