Greta Gerwig and Lola Kirke School Each Other in New Trailer for 'Mistress America'

For the last two decades, writer-director Noah Baumbach has worked with his actors to create such memorable characters as Jeff Daniels’ arrogant novelist in The Squid and the Whale and Ben Stiller’s manic letter-writer in Greenberg. But his most frequent muse these days is 32-year-old Greta Gerwig, who earned a Golden Globe nomination for playing a free-spirited New Yorker in 2012’s Frances Ha. In Baumbach’s forthcoming comedy Mistress America — the trailer for which you can watch above — he reteams with Gerwig (who co-wrote the script) in the story of an unconventional mentor-mentee relationship.

Gerwig plays super-confident (but perpetually in-flux) multi-hyphenate who takes her soon-to-be-stepsister (Gone Girl’s Lola Kirke) under her wing. The two get pulled into each other’s lives, with increasingly odd (and frequently hilarious) results.

Mistress America opens in theaters beginning Aug. 14.
