'Grey's Anatomy' Fans, You'll Never Guess Which Cast Member Is Finally Coming Back
Throughout the past 20 season, Grey's Anatomy fans have seen many of their favorite doctors on the hit Shonda Rhimes series leave the show — some in truly heartbreaking ways. But viewers have also seen a number of characters return to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, and it looks like this upcoming season is set to welcome back another fan favorite.
According to Deadline, the positive and overly perky Dr. Sydney Heron, played by Kali Rocha, will returning to the ABC medical drama after almost two decades for a three-episode arc in the upcoming season 21.
Many remember Sydney as the very energetic fourth-year resident who came onto the scene back in season 2 when she was left in charge of the original group of interns — Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), Christina (Sandra Oh), George (T. R. Knight), Izzie (Katherine Heigl) and Alex (Justin Chambers) — when Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) went on maternity leave. She continued to return as a recurring character in season 3 for five episodes, and for two additional episodes in season 4. She also drew attention for her interactions with other main cast members, like when she went on a date with Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) while he was on a break from Meredith, unsuccessfully ran against Dr. Torres (Sara Ramirez) and Dr. Bailey for Chief Resident and helped Izzie work through her grief after the death of her patient-turned-fiancé Denny (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).
Although a more minor member of the cast, she certainly left fans divided, with some enjoying her super enthusiastic attitude while others, like the interns in the show, found her peppiness a bit overpowering. Nevertheless, she was still a fairly important character so it'll be exciting to see her return after 17 years.
Kali's return isn't the only casting shakeup this season. Ellen Pompeo, who stepped back as a full time cast member back in season 19, will reportedly have an "increased presence" along with Scott Speedman (who plays Dr. Nick Marsh, Meredith's partner), according to TVLine. Current cast members Jake Borelli, who plays Levi, and Midori Francis who plays Mika, will be exiting the show.
