"Needing to stay connected at all times – even tethering themselves with ropes – they cling to one another, urging each other to never let go. But when one of the boys questions if the evil is real, the ties that bind them together are severed, triggering a terrifying fight for survival," it adds.

While speaking about the film at CinemaCon on April 10, Berry admitted she had to do a "little bit of Method acting" in order to play someone in survival mode in the wilderness.

She noted that her character was "eating bugs and frogs — raw frogs — in the woods," sharing, "I had to really skin a squirrel. These things wildly challenged me to create some reality within this world that felt so foreign."

PETA later confirmed that director Alexandre Aja, who has made animal-centric horror films like 2010's Piranha 3D and 2019's Crawl, only used realistic-looking props, PEOPLE previously reported.

Lauren Thomasson, PETA's director of animals in film and television, said in a statement, "While moviegoers may squirm in their seats at the sight of a 'squirrel' being skinned, Alexandre Aja’s use of movie magic instead of a thinking, feeling being in Never Let Go once again proves that technology is the key to modern, humane movie production."

Never Let Go hits theaters on Sept. 20.
