Happy Death Day 3 Update Given by Jessica Rothe
Jessica Rothe has provided an update on Happy Death Day 3.
Speaking with ScreenGeek, Rothe — who Tree Gelbman in 2017’s Happy Death Day and the 2019 sequel, Happy Death Day 2U — provided an update regarding a potential third film in the horror franchise.
“Well, I can say Chris Landon has the whole thing figured out,” Rothe said. “We just need to wait for Blumhouse and Universal to get their ducks in a row. But my fingers are so crossed. I think Tree deserves her third and final chapter to bring that incredible character and franchise to a close or a new beginning.”
Christopher Landon has already pitched Happy Death Day 3 to Universal
Landon directed both Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2U. He was attached to direct the seventh film in the Scream franchise for a time; however, he left the project shortly after Melissa Barrera was fired and Jenna Ortega dropped out.
Landon told IndieWire in 2023 that he’s already pitched a third Happy Death Day movie to Universal. “I have a whole movie! It’s not even an idea. I pitched the entire movie to [Universal] and they loved it. That was the funny part. They were like, oh my god, that’s so unexpected and so cool. It’s not dependent, it’s not set in the same day as the previous films, so it could be made now, or in two years or three years. It would still work. But the trickier thing too, and in fairness to them, it’s a bigger idea than the previous two films, so it would be a more expensive movie.”
Lando also told Empire Magazine in October 2020 that the working title for the third Happy Death Day movie is Happy Death Day to Us.
Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2U are both available to rent on digital streaming platforms.
