Harry Connick Jr. spoke at Loyola University New Orleans commencement ceremony last Saturday held at the the Mercedes-Benz Superdome after receiving an honorary doctorate of music from the Jesuit school.

“If you work and pay attention to the smallest details of your work, your relationships, your faith, you’ll find that over time you will have created a lot of great things — things of worth, things of substance and quality,” he told the audience of graduates in his hometown.
Connick Jr. spoke to more than 750 graduates and a crowd of 8,000, drawing on lessons learned throughout his career as a musician, actor and entertainer, while providing advice for success after graduation. He quoted Pope Francis towards the end of the commencement speech, advising the room reflect on the impact small steps may have on larger results.

Loyola University New Orleans is the only one of 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the U.S. to include a College of Music and Fine Arts.
“I can hold my head high because you and I have something in common: it may have taken me 30 years longer than you, but all of us get degrees from Loyola today,” Connick said.
