How Will Dr. Crockett Marcel Leave Chicago Med?
The Season 9 finale of Chicago Med, “I Think I Know You, but Do I Really?” sets up Dr. Marcel’s exit when Chief of Patient and Medical Services Sharon Goodwin gives Marcel her blessing for him to take a break from the ED after the death of one of his patients, Colin, and later his father.
Colin tragically passed away after his planned liver transplant was canceled due to an infection, despite the father’s pleas that not going forward with the surgery would kill his son. After Colin’s death, his father committed suicide. In the last episode of the season, we see Dr. Marcel shaken by the news, which forces him to confront his own grief at the loss of his daughter Harper, who died of Leukemia soon after her first birthday.
Since Chicago Med already set up his exit, it seems like the most obvious answer is that Dr. Marcel will indeed take his time to grieve and end up not returning to Chicago Med afterward, for whatever reason. Grief is a complicated thing, and sometimes the only thing that helps is a new beginning. Dr. Marcel might feel like the only way to start fresh is to go somewhere else, and start anew.

But that fresh start might even involve someone else. If it ever felt like Crockett ever had a romantic connection that could last with someone, it was Pamela Blake. And then, he decided he cared more about her life than her career, which in most cases, would be romantic! Except, we’re talking about surgeons here. Last we heard about Pamela Blake she was in Boston. If Dr. Crockett Marcel is looking for a fresh start, Boston could be one place to look. Everyone’s getting their happy ending, why can’t Marcel?
Or, perhaps, Marcel’s happy ending is about honoring his daughter’s memory. Perhaps, when all is said and done, what he wants is to take a job that honors her. That would be a fitting end to his storyline, and it wouldn’t be surprising to hear in a few episodes that Dr. Crockett Marcel will not return – because he has taken another job, one that is meant to honor Harper in some way. Maybe one to do with children or cancer patients. Either way, however, Chicago Med chooses to write out Crockett Marcel, let us hope he gets an ending that allows him the chance to heal and find happiness, even if it is off-screen.

Rains joined Chicago Med as Dr. Crockett Marcel, a trauma surgeon at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center’s Emergency Department in Season 5. After five seasons on the series, news broke in June 2024 that Rains was leaving the One Chicago show, with Season 9 being his last season as a series regular. Deadline reported that it’s unclear whether Rains will appear as a guest star in Season 10 to wrap up Marcel’s storyline, while Variety reported that he will not return for Season 10.
Marcel hasn’t been the only departure, with the show seeing the likes of Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss), Ethan Choi (Brian Tee), Dylan Scott (Guy Lockard), Pamela Blake (Sarah Rafferty), Vanessa Taylor (Asjha Cooper) and April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) among the characters departing the show in recent seasons.
