Heartland Film festival 2024: Movies will show Cillian Murphy, Amy Adams and more stars

The 33rd edition of the Heartland International Film Festival will bring famous faces to screens around Indianapolis. Amy Adams, Zoe Salda?a, Selena Gomez, Cillian Murphy, Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin are a few of the stars whose work will populate this year's festival, which bears the theme "expand your universe."

From Oct. 10 to 20, Heartland will show more than 110 feature films, including 28 world, North American and U.S. premieres and 10 Indiana Spotlight films. The festival will award more than $60,000 in cash prizes at an Oct. 19 celebration at The Jazz Kitchen.

  • "A Real Pain": Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin play cousins who come together to tour Poland and honor their grandmother. (Opening night, Oct. 10 at Newfields. $20)

  • "Small Things Like These": Cillian Murphy plays a father and coal merchant who uncovers troubling secrets at a local convent in a small, Catholic Church-controlled Irish town. Director Tim Mielants will attend a post-screening discussion. (Centerpiece screening, Oct. 16 at Newfields. $15)

  • "Emilia Pérez": Four women search for their own paths to happiness in Mexico, including a cartel leader who asks an unsung lawyer to help fake her death so the leader can live authentically. Stars include Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Salda?a, Selena Gomez and Adriana Paz. (Closing night, Oct. 20 at Newfields. $15)

Look for three free events and screenings as well, including the Oct. 12 screening of "Dirty Dancing" at Newfields; Oct. 12 Pitchox Main Event at the Kan-Kan Cinema in which documentary filmmakers can pitch projects to get $10,000; and the Oct. 14 slate of 2024 Finalists and Winners with the Easterseals Disability Film Challenge, a Heartland partner.

  • "Unstoppable": This movie follows wrestler Anthony Robles, who was born with one leg and becomes a champion in college who competes against the school that rejected him.

  • "Nightbitch": A woman, played by Amy Adams, decides to take a break from her career to be a stay-at-home mom but finds herself in a surreal situation.

  • "Ernest Cole: Lost and Found". The film chronicles the journey of the first Black freelance photographer in apartheid South Africa.

  • "Blink": A family travels to see the world's beauty so that three of their children can see the wonders before their sight is claimed by an incurable eye condition.

  • "Major Taylor: Champion of the Race": The Indianapolis bicycle racer broke racist boundaries on his way to world-championship status.

  • "We Strangers": In this movie, a woman in Gary takes a new job cleaning the homes of rich, suburban families, and she tells a small lie that has unexpected consequences.

  • "The Waiting Game": The documentary examines a small not-for-profit's fight against the NBA as ABA players seek payment for their part in building the league.

Patrons can watch all films on site and see many virtually if they're watching in the U.S. For showtimes, visit: heartlandfilm.org/festival. The locations include:

How to buy tickets

Buy tickets at heartlandfilmfestival.org or at a theater 30 minutes before the film begins.

Single tickets are $12 for theater screenings, $15 for virtual screenings, and $10 to $20 for premium events. A 10-pack of tickets is $110, a fest pass is $180, and a duo fest pass, which serves two people, is $350. Fest passes include all physical and virtual screenings except premium events. Heartland Film members receive 20% off.
