On September 26, Kotb fought back tears as she announced her upcoming departure from Today, noting, “it was time for me to turn the page… and to try something new.” The host shared, “I decided that this is the right time for me to kind of move on.”
At the time, Guthrie praised her colleague for making the tough decision. “Hoda, we love you so much. And when you look around and see these tears, they’re love,” she said. “You are so loved. I don’t think any of us can imagine… We don’t want to imagine this place without you.”
Guthrie continued, “So it’s complicated because we love you so much and we don’t want you to ever go. But also, I just want to say I am so proud of my friend. You have guts. For someone to leave at the top of their game — to leave something that’s wonderful, that you love, where it’s easy and comfortable and beautiful and fun and say, ‘But I dream even bigger for myself,’ into the great unknown, you have so much guts.”
“You inspire me. I love you,” Guthrie added. “You are our sunshine.”

Is Savannah Guthrie Leaving Today?
Guthrie seemed to hint that she could be the next to leave Today. In an interview with Us Weekly at the Project Healthy Minds 2nd Annual World Mental Health Day Gala in New York City on October 10, Guthrie noted, “Hoda and I have had this discussion for years and years. We’re dear friends and we have a lot of similarities. We’re basically in the same phase of life.”
She added, “We have these little kids that we both feel so lucky that we got to have later in life. It makes a lot of sense to me what she has decided.”
A source for Page Six said that Guthrie may also be considering leaving the morning show. “She is the beating heart of Today. There is so much support for her,” the insider shared, adding that “there was chatter that Savannah was planning her own exit” in 2025. According to the source, however, Kotb’s departure “has made that all but impossible.”
Given that replacing Kotb on the show will be a challenge, it’s believed that Today will want to retain Guthrie as long as possible. A source told The Daily Mail, “Savannah’s contract is coming up next year and they want to keep her and will be doing anything they can to continue their relationship with Savannah as a means of not overhauling everything.”
In an interview with Page Six, Guthrie expressed how Kotb’s decision left her conflicted. Obviously, she’s thrilled for her friend, but will also feel the loss.
“It’s complicated because it’s, like, I’m so happy for her and I’m so proud of her as her friend because she’s following her heart and it’s a big bode of confidence in herself and her future not because she knows what it will be but because she believes in herself and she trusts her gut,” Guthrie said.
She added, “As her friend, I love that. As her partner in the morning, I’ll miss her. I’ll really, really miss her. We all will, you know? To me, she’s irreplaceable.”
