Somehow, "House of the Dragon" season 2 is almost at an end. If you've not hopped on board just yet, now is the perfect time to get caught up on one of the best shows on Max and, frankly, all of TV.
The "Game of Thrones" prequel's first season — which is set nearly 200 years before the events of the flagship show — featured 10 hourlong episodes, capping off with that dramatic finale, "The Black Queen," on October 23, 2022.
Across that first season, we saw House Targaryen split into two factions, setting the stage for the infamous "Dance of the Dragons" civil war which decides which group will eventually lay claim to the Iron Throne. (Here's a "House of the Dragon" season 1 recap if you need a reminder of what's happened so far).
Season 2, sadly, is only eight episodes long and is continuing to air on Sunday nights on HBO and Max — but not for long.

Season 2 picks up shortly after the events of the climactic season 1 finale, wherein Rhaneyra (Emma D'Arcy) was crowned by her allies as the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms following King Viserys' (Paddy Considine) death. Already dealing with opposition from her half-brother, Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) who'd been crowned by the Greens in King's Landing, her reign became even more complicated when her son Lucerys Velaryon (Elliot Grihault) was killed by Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) and his colossal dragon, Vhagar.
That first move drew Rhaenyra's ire, and she sought retribution for her son's death. As the season has continued, the Dance has now finally taken flight. Peace now seems impossible, as bloody battles have already been fought across the Seven Kingdoms, and we've already suffered another huge death. Who knows what the rest of the season has in store for us?
