The insider also said that since “the youth adventure market is on fire,” producers want the sequel to have a plot that will be well received by both longtime fans and new viewers.

“The Goonies” was directed by Richard Donner, who died in 2021 at age 91.

Steven Spielberg devised the story for the classic family movie, which followed a group of neighborhood kids living in Astoria, Oregon, who head out on a perilous adventure.

Chris Columbus, who wrote the screenplay for the film, recalled after Donner’s death that the late director called him to talk about a sequel to “The Goonies.”

“He called me and said, ‘You know what we should do? We’re gonna get on my boat, smoke pot for three days and come up with an idea for ‘Goonies 2,’” Columbus, 65, told Empire magazine in 2021.

“I said to Dick, ‘Well, first of all, I don’t smoke pot. But maybe if I come down, we’ll have a couple of drinks together and sit on the boat.’ It never happened. And I regret that. Because I would drop everything to do that right now.”

Most of “The Goonies” cast reunited virtually in 2020 on Josh Gad’s web series, during which Spielberg, 77, explained why there hasn’t been a sequel yet.

“Every couple of years we come up with an idea but then it doesn’t hold water,” he said.

“The problem is the bar that all of you raised on this genre, I don’t think we’ve really successfully been able to find an idea that is better than The Goonies that we all made in the eighties,” Spielberg added.
