History Sets New Military Reality Series From Peter Berg
History has slotted December 15 for the premiere of a new military special operations reality series from executive producer Peter Berg (Lone Survivor), his unscripted shingle Film 45 and Bunim/Murray Productions.
The Selection: Special Operations Experiment — based on Minnow Films’ format SAS: Who Dares Wins — takes 30 men and women with no military background through the most intense physical and mental challenge of their lives, according to History. The volunteers are trained and led by veterans of the Navy SEALs, Green Berets and Army Rangers, who drive those who are willing to push themselves to the limits of the human body and mind. The eight-episode series will premiere at 10 PM Thursday, December 15. Watch a trailer above.
With the instructors challenging them both mentally and physically, including tear gas, interrogation simulation and psychological warfare among other tests, the participants are driven to the point of breaking and are able to remove themselves from the program at any stage. This is not a competition series – no cash rewards – only a test against oneself to see if the mind has the will and strength to push the body to complete the challenges. The instructors include Navy SEALs Marcus Capone, Ray Care and Sean Haggerty; Special Forces Green Berets Donnie Bowen and Bert Kuntz; and Army Ranger Tyler Grey.
This is the second series focused on military special ops from Berg, following docuseries Live to Tell . which premiered January 10 on History. It looked at recent U.S. Special Operations Forces missions, as told by those who experienced the front lines of the ongoing war on terror.
“Throughout the history of our nation, Special Operations training tactics has played an integral part in our military endeavors and this series gives viewers a rare glimpse into what it takes to be selected among the elite,” said Paul Cabana, EVP and Head of Programming at History. “The Selection will offer civilians the unique opportunity to take part in an immersive, authentic course instructed by different branches leading together, while giving viewers insight into the origins of these challenges.”
The Selection: Special Operations Experiment is produced for History by Film 45 and Bunim/Murray Productions. Berg, Matt Goldberg, Brandon Carroll, and Grant Kahler are executive producers for Film 45, and Gil Goldschein is executive producer for Bunim/Murray Productions. Cem Yeter and Joel Karsberg also serve as executive producers. Tim Healy, Stephen Mintz and Russ McCarroll are executive producers for History.
