House of the Dragon Season 3 Confirmed for HBO and Max

Just a couple of days before House of the Dragon Season 2's premiere, set for June 16, HBO has renewed the series for a third season.

Of course, there are no details about Season 3’s plot, returning cast or release date, as we will have to watch Season 2 first.

The first reviews of House of the Dragon’s Season 2 are already in, and the show is sitting on a ‘Certified Fresh’ score of 86% on review aggegator Rotten Tomatoes, so the decision to renew it even before the second season has aired doesn’t come as a surprise.

HBO’s chief of programming and drama series Francesca Orsi said this about the show's renewal:

“George [R.R. Martin], Ryan [Condal], and the rest of our incredible executive producers, cast, and crew, have reached new heights with the phenomenal second season.

“We are in awe of the dragon-sized effort the entire team has put into the creation of a spectacular season two, with a scope and scale that is only rivalled by its heart. We could not be more thrilled to continue the story of House Targaryen and watch this team burn bright again for season three.”

House of the Dragon first aired on HBO in 2022. It takes place nearly 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and focuses on the story of House Targaryen. The prequel show is based on the second half of George R.R. Martin’s 2018 book Fire & Blood.

The story of Daenerys Targaryen’s ancestors started a trend of prequel shows on streaming platforms, which is all the rage right now, with series like Star Wars: The Acolyte, which just started on Disney+, and the upcoming Dune: Prophecy on Max, set 10,000 years before Paul Atreides.

HBO is also working on another Game of Thrones prequel show, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which will take place a century before the main series.
