Ice Cube Is Unbothered About Former NWA Jerry Heller’s Death

NWA’s former manager Jerry Heller’s death merited mixed emotions from fans of the beloved rap group. Some credit Heller for introducing NWA to the masses, which thus helped catapult them to the icons they are today, while others viewed Heller as greedy opportunist who only used the group for his benefit and robbed them out of millions owed.

Either way one slices it, Ice Cube isn’t concerned. During an interview with Detroit’s 107. 5, Cube made it plain he is completely unbothered by the 76-year-olds passing.

“I didn’t have no emotions,” Cube said. “I’m glad I’m with DJ Yella, I’m glad I’m with MC Rehn today, it’s only right. “I ain’t gonna pop no champagne but I ain’t gonna shed no tears either. It is what it is… He’s outta here. I’m not losing no sleep over Heller,” he said.

Heller suffered a heart attack while driving, which resulted in a car accident on Sept. 2. After Heller’s death, his lawyer blamed the 2015 blockbuster film Straight Outta Compton as the cause of his death. Heller didn’t like the film’s depiction of him as a unsavory manager, and claims he never shorted the group out of royalty money. However, Cube and Dr. Dre for years have been vocal about Heller’s shady business practices and claim the film’s portrayal of him was accurate.

Before Heller died, he leveled a $110 million defamation lawsuit against Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and the Eazy-E estate and Straight Outta Compton’s filmmakers for depicting him as a “exploitative record label manager.”
