Inside Tom Hanks and Robin Wright’s 30-Year Friendship and Reunion in ‘Here’
Nothing is more wholesome than reuniting with a good friend you haven’t seen in a while. And that’s exactly what happened for acting duo, Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. The pair are starring in a new film together 30 years after the release of their blockbuster hit, Forrest Gump, and Hanks feels they “picked up right where they left off.” Keep reading to learn more about their reunion and new film and how their friendship has remained strong over the years.
Tom Hanks and Robin Wright reunite for new film ‘Here’
Most people are likely familiar with the 1994 movie Forrest Gump and its main characters, Forrest (Hanks) and Jenny (Wright). Now, Hanks and Wright have reunited for a new film Here, and the pair couldn’t be happier to work together again.
While on the red carpet for Here’s world premiere at AFI Fest in Los Angeles on Friday, October 25, Hanks talked about what it was like to work with Wright—and Forrest Gump’s director Robert Zemeckis— 30 years later.
"Everybody was [saying], 'Oh, what was it like, the reunion?' " Hanks told People about being back on set with Wright. "You know what it was? It was like, 'Hey, how you doing?'"
"We just picked up right where we left off," Hanks continued. "I'm going to say we love each other because we're so easy with each other. It was a luxury to be able to come in and get the same conversations we've been having for the last 30 years after a moment of, 'Hey, this kooky look, do you believe this? Can you believe this? Look at this, look at this.'"
Robin Wright and Robert Zemeckis reflect on their friendship with Hanks
During a behind-the-scenes look at Here, Wright told People that working with Hanks and Zemeckis came easily. "Working with people you know and you're compatible with, there's nothing like that." She added that Here is "one of the best working experiences of my career."
In the interview, Zemeckis also said, "I've been looking to do a movie with Tom and Robin since the three of us did Forrest Gump.” He’s worked with both Hanks and Wright for individual projects in the years following the 1994 movie, but the three of them are finally working on a project again.
"We could put our heads together and know exactly what we wanted to try different," Hanks said of working with Wright and Zemeckis now.
What is the film ‘Here’ about?
Here, set to release on November 1, 2024, is based on a graphic novel by Richard McGuire. According to a synopsis, it’s a generational story about families and the special place they inhabit, sharing in love, loss, laughter, and life.
Hanks plays Richard, while Wright plays Margaret. Other cast members include Paul Bettany, Kelly Reilly, and Michelle Dockery. This movie is unique in its narration and film technique. According to Vanity Fair, the film is told entirely from one perspective, and the camera frame never moves.
“The single perspective never changes, but everything around it does,” Zemeckis told Vanity Fair. “It’s actually never been done before. There are similar scenes in very early silent movies, before the language of montage was invented. But other than that, yeah, it was a risky venture."
Movie magic is a huge part of the film, especially the hair and makeup team. Hanks and Wright play their characters at various ages throughout the story and have to channel appearances and mannerisms from present times to 40 or 50 years in the past.
Zemeckis wrote the movie alongside Forrest Gump screenwriter Eric Roth, and they hope to capture the human experience in its purest form with the story.
