‘Insidious: Chapter 3′ & ‘Spy’ Get Busy Frame Started With Previews – Box Office
Focus Features/Gramercy’s Insidious: Chapter 3 frightened $1.55M out of moviegoers’ wallets into theaters’ cash drawers last night while 20th Century Fox’s Spy rang up $1.5M in Thursday night previews.
Previews began at 7 PM for Insidious: Chapter 3 in 2,150 theaters, while Spy kicked off at 5 PM.
While the horror film edged out Spy, it is the Paul Feig-directed R-rated film that is expected to have the upper hand over FSS with a take in the low to mid $30Ms. Spy‘s take last night is up there with Kingsman‘s Thursday previews of $1.4M, which began at 8 PM, and Feig and star Melissa McCarthy’s previous combo, The Heat, which grossed $1M off 10 PM previews. The pic has a 94% Rotten Tomatoes rating. Spy per industry tracking has positive interest among women under 25 (79%), over 25 (77%) and men under 25 (71%).
Insidous: Chapter 3 was produced by Blumhouse for $10M. eOne is handling the pic in Canada. Currently, the film is generating positive interest among men under 25 at 65%. Worldwide, the franchise has grossed $258.9M.
Warner Bros.’ Entourage, one of the frame’s frosh openers, made $2M yesterday, down 63% from its $5.3M Wednesday bow. Current cume stands at $7.4M. Pic earned an A- CinemaScore, which means audiences should keep coming. Entourage is currently big with guys in terms of positive word-of-mouth with 55% under 25, and 56% among those over 25. The studio’s San Andreas from New Line topped all pics yesterday, grossing $3.5M and bringing its first week’s cume to $72.6M.
