The Irrational Premiere Recap: Who Took Rose?! Plus — Grade It!
If going through tough times strengthens a couple’s bond, The Irrational’s Alec and Rose should be set for life after the events of the Season 2 premiere.
The episode wastes little time in answering the question: Who kidnapped Alec’s ex-spy kinda-girlfriend in the Season 1 finale? Turns out, it’s a guy named Gavin, whose wife, Fiona, was killed years ago in an MI6 operation that Rose oversaw. Gavin also kidnaps Rose’s former handler, Harry.

He chains both of his captives up in a warehouse and tortures Rose with electrical shocks until she admits the truth: Fiona was collateral damage when the op went sideways. Gavin says her story confirms what Harry said… and then shoots him dead, right in front of her.
Meanwhile, Alec realizes something is up when Rose doesn’t show for their date. His calls go straight to her voicemail, and her car is missing from her home. Pretty soon, he figures out that she’s been taken. And when he and Marisa interrogate a middleman in the kidnapping, Alec eventually winds up at Gavin’s place to see if he can find any missed clues. The professor is on the phone with Rizwan when a van pulls up outside; Alec guesses that he’s about to be taken hostage, too, and he’s going to go along with it so that he can help Rose.
So Alec is there when Rose confesses to Gavin that Fiona was working for her and takes responsibility for giving the order to fire that led to the shootout that killed his wife. Then there’s a lot of back-and-forth. Gavin threatens to shoot up a British school in retaliation. Then there’s a bomb. Eventually, Alec offers to have Marisa record her confession so Gavin can do what he likes with it. But the move is just to get the kidnapper to turn his burner phone back on, so the FBI can track it.
All along, you might have been wondering: Why does this grieving husband have such a punchable face? And if you were, you’re vindicated when Rose reveals that Gavin was abusing Fiona, and she was planning to leave him. There’s a scuffle, but thankfully the FBI has caught up to Gavin’s van, and they shoot him and save Rose and Alec.
Not long after, Alec stops by Rose’s place while she’s packing for her next job in Dubai. She gets choked up thinking about how close she came to losing him, then maintains he’d hate her if she knew all the things she’d done in the name of serving her country. But he reassures her that’s not true, and they kiss.
