Isabella Rossellini Proves the Power of a Great Red Lip at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards

Isabella Rossellini just graced the Golden Globes red carpet on Jan. 5, with a nomination for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture for her performance as the quiet yet stern Sister Agnes in the Vatican thriller “Conclave.” Though she has but a few lines in the film, they’re poignant and attention-grabbing: so much so that, according to Town & Country, her appearances inspired standing ovations during multiple screenings.

Another thing deserving of a standing ovation? Rossellini’s red carpet makeup look, powered by Lanc?me and engineered by Afganistan-born artist Matin Maulawizada, who has in the past worked with talent ranging from Angelina Jolie to Jessica Chastain to Lupita Nyong’o. For this evening, Maulawizada started by prepping Rossellini’s skin even before an ounce of makeup was applied to it: with products like the Lanc?me Génifique HydroGel Sheet Mask and the Lanc?me Absolue Revitalizing Eye Serum for plumping plus hydration. The star’s even complexion was made possible with the Lanc?me Teint Idole Ultra Wear Foundation in 205C, which delivers breathable matte coverage while being waterproof, as well as sweat- and humidity-resistant (a red carpet savior, if you ask us). The barely-there blush gracing Rossellini’s cheekbones was the Lanc?me Blush Subtil Powder Blush in 345 Rose Fresque, and the liquid eyeliner emphasizing her eyes in a bold black was the Lanc?me Drama Liqui-Pencil Dramatic Eyeliner in 01 Café Noir.
Maulawizada wanted his client’s lips to be the focal point, so he chose the Lanc?me L’Absolu Rouge Drama Matte Lipstick in 505 Drama Matte Attrape Coeur to do the job, topped with the the same lipstick but in the 430 Plum Addiction shade for an added layer of dimension. The final lip look color-matched Rossellini’s attire of choice — a custom-made Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda long-sleeved lace dress with an attached sheer cape, complemented by pointed toe heels and a chain strap clutch of the same color — almost to a tee. Maulawizada also used a new Lanc?me product on her: the Lanc?me Lash Id?le Flutter Extension Lengthening Mascara, applied to the top and bottom lashes.
The overarching theme of Rossellini’s look just might be sheer sophistication — from the way her cropped hair is styled with slight upward lift to her distinct yet restrained eye look to her ruby chandelier earrings.

This setup is just a bit bolder than Maulawizada’s work on Rossellini for this year’s Palm Springs International Film Festival. There, the 72-year-old star flaunted a loose-fitting, long-sleeved dress, also from Dolce & Gabanna and marked by a print of yellow roses — with a harmonized makeup look featuring a touch of blush, blue-hued eyeshadow to accentuate her eyes, defined brows, and a soft pink (versus high-pigment red) lip.
In general, Rossellini’s red carpet beauty looks in the recent past have been glam but subtle, not an easy balance to strike. Usually, as during this year’s Golden Globes, the most eye-catching feature is her lips: which were a rich berry at the 2024 European Film Awards, a pinker hue at the “Conclave” New York premiere this past October, and a glossy, deep red at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. Rossellini seems to be a fan of matching her lipsticks, stains, and glosses to what she’s wearing, like high-contrast red muumuus or pops of the color lining her jacket pockets and collars.
Born and raised in Rome, Rossellini is the daughter of Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini — a Swedish actress of “Casablanca” fame, with four Golden Globe awards to her name, and an Italian film director, respectively. As far as Golden Globes nominations go for Rossellini herself, this isn’t her first rodeo: In 1997, she was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made for Television — for her role as Anna Hauptmann, the wife of a man believed to have kidnapped and murdered the famed aviator Charles Lindbergh’s baby.
Rossellini has a history of playing headstrong characters. Titles she’s most known for include the 1986 David Lynch–directed movie “Blue Velvet” — in which she stars as the sultry and seductive nightclub singer Dorothy Vallens — as well as 1992’s “Death Becomes Her,” where Rossellini plays the mysterious, wealthy, and tantalizing socialite Lisle Von Rhuman, who specializes in providing potions for eternal youth.
This is quite ironic, considering the fact that, in real life, Rossellini is an outspoken advocate for embracing aging. Speaking on getting old in a 2024 interview with The Guardian, she says: “You know, you get wrinkles and you get fat and you lose a kind of beauty — that is true. But they never talk about the freedom that comes with that. More than freedom, a lightness… When you’re old, you’re not proving yourself any more.”
The actress’s relationship with Lanc?me is one that has deep roots. In 1982, she signed an exclusive deal with the company, making her the world’s highest-paid model at the time. Some time into this partnership, Rossellini became the spokesperson for the brand’s perfume Trésor, a warm and sensual combination of rose, lily of the valley, and lilac. She was Lanc?me’s international face for 14 years until, at the age of 42, they cut ties with her — needing someone younger. Though this caused quite the chaos and indignation in the industry, in 2016 Rossellini once again accepted the invitation to be their spokesmodel and muse.

Rossellini’s daughter Elettra Rossellini Wiedemann also worked as the face of Lanc?me in the early 2000s, which also counts celebrities like Julia Roberts, Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins, Emma Chamberlain, and, most recently, Olivia Rodrigo among its global ambassador roster.
Perhaps as an ode to Rossellini’s penchant for an iconic lip moment at red carpets, Lanc?me released a shade of the L’Absolu Rouge Drama Matte Lipstick in her name. Called Mademoiselle Isabella, it’s a dark purple with a matte texture and ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and rose extracts that ensure long-lasting moisture. We’re tempted to buy it in multiples.
