James Bond is back, but new 007 Lashana Lynch steals the show in the first 'No Time to Die' trailer
Daniel Craig is officially hanging up his tux with his fifth and final James Bond outing, No Time to Die, but the franchise was never gonna let him retire quietly. The first trailer for the 25th 007 adventure, directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, premiered today and teases a grand exit for one of the most popular Bonds of all time — an exit that will feature new allies, new enemies, new death-defying stunts and the return of an old villain who has pursued England’s super-spy across the decades. (Watch the trailer above.)
The new ally that has Twitter most excited is Nomi, a new MI6 agent played by breakout Captain Marvel star Lashana Lynch. It’s been rumored for awhile now that Nomi has, in fact, replaced Bond since the latter’s retirement following the events of Spectre, making her the first female 007 in franchise history. The trailer doesn’t confirm or deny that rumor, with Nomi informing her predecessor that she’s been operating as a 00 for two years, but declining to specify the final digit in her code number. What we do learn is that she’s every bit Bond’s equal in the field, and isn’t particularly intimidated to be in the presence of one of the agency’s most famous operatives. “The world has moved on, Commander Bond,” she says. “So stay in your lane. You get in my way, I will put a bullet in your knee — the one that works.” (That totally sounds like a Phoebe Waller-Bridge line, for the record.)

NO TIME TO DIE looks superb. Lashana Lynch immediately stands out in the trailer and looks like the film's MVP. Can't wait.

WOW this looks great. Love Daniel Craig, as always, but can't wait to see Lashana Lynch put him in his place and Ana de Armas kicking ass too! https://t.co/2XuNgsAGSj

Lynch isn’t the only actress making a killer impression in the trailer. Knives Out star Ana de Armas shows off some serious firepower as Paloma, who rides shotgun with Bond for part of this adventure.

Lynch and De Armas are entering Bond’s life at the right time, because his relationship with Dr. Madeline Swann (Léa Seydoux) appears to have gotten seriously complicated. The trailer hints that the psychiatrist who stole his heart in Spectre is at the heart of No Time to Die’s central mystery — a twist of fate that delights Bond’s lifelong nemesis, Ernst Stavro Blofeld (Christoph Waltz). “You gave up everything for her,” he taunts James when they meet again. “When her secret finds its way out, it will be the death of you.”
Swann has some fierce competition in the “killing 007” department. Oscar-winner Rami Malek joins the franchise as the villainous Safin, who appears to have very personal feelings about Bond. “I could be speaking to my own reflection,” he remarks. “Only your skills die with your body. Mine will survive long after I’m gone.” That suggests that Safin has stumbled onto some kind of grand plan for immortality, even as Bond’s time on Earth seems to be ticking down.
Not that the character is going anywhere anytime soon: 007 will almost certainly return within the next few years, whether Craig’s license to kill is carried by Lynch or someone else as the film franchise approaches its 60th anniversary in 2022. No Time to Die is hyper-aware of Bond’s long pop culture history, incorporating a Sean Connery-era shout-out into one particularly nifty bit of action. We can’t wait to be shaken — and stirred — by Craig’s final mission next spring.
No Time to Die opens in theaters April 8.
