James Earl Jones Takes Back Broadway in ‘You Can’t Take It With You’

James Earl Jones will return to Broadway this fall in a revival of George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart’s “You Can’t Take It With You.”

Scott Ellis helms the comedy about an eccentric family thrown into upheaval when the daughter falls in love with an uptight young man. Jones, who also starred in the 2010 revival of “Driving in Miss Daisy,” will play the grandfather in a multi-racial cast.

The 1936 Kaufman and Hart play will arrive on the Main Stem in the wake of “Act One,” the James Lapine play at Lincoln Center Theater that is an adaptation of Hart’s biography, which details his partnership with Kaufman.

Busy producers Jeffrey Richards and Jerry Frankel (“The Bridges of Madison County,” “The Realistic Joneses,” “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill”) also produced the 2012 revival of “The Best Man,” in which Jones also appeared. The duo produce “You Can’t Take It With You” with Steve Traxler, Jessica Genick and Will Trice.

“You Can’t Take It With You” is penciled in for a run at a Shubert theater (exact venue to be determined), starting previews in August ahead of a Sept. 28 opening.
