Jason Alexander and other TV stars take part in 'support group' for Emmy losers
The 2021 Emmy Awards Sunday took a moment to recognize some actors who have not taken home the trophy. Jason Alexander, Scott Bakula, Alyson Hannigan and Zooey Deschanel joined the broadcast for a hilarious sketch with Emmys host Cedric the Entertainer, portraying a support group for Emmy-less actors.
Bakula, who started his acting career in the ’70s and has enjoyed successes like Quantum Leap and NCIS: New Orleans, got things started, saying he would trade a house for an Emmy. That’s when Hannigan, who starred in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and How I Met Your Mother, started fake crying, saying that maybe this could get her an Emmy.
It’s almost a crime that Alexander never won for his role of George Costanza on Seinfeld, so even though this was just a comedy sketch, he has reason for real beef.
“Alyson, you should get down on your knees and thank the universe that you’ve never been nominated,” Alexander said to Hannigan. “I’ve been nominated eight times, seven consecutive for playing George Costanza. [Singing] Co-stan-za. Yeah, sure you know him. Everybody loves him. Everybody loves him. I lost all of the seven times. I want my Emmy.”
The sketch was also joined by Fred Savage, who poked his head out from behind a monitor to respond to Alexander saying he’s been acting since he was a kid. Savage, who starred in The Wonder Years from 1988 to 1993, was snubbed by the Emmys at a very young age.
“Oh, did you start early, Jason? Did you start young?” Savage said. “Because I have two nominations by the time I was 14. Zero wins. You don’t bounce back. That’s why I’m reduced to directing this sketch.”
Deschanel, who starred in The New Girl, had a more cerebral position… at first.
“I haven’t won an Emmy, but you know what? My generation isn’t into awards. We’re all deserving of love and respect,” Deschanel said. But it didn’t take long for that to turn into, “But also, where’s my f***ing Emmy? Where’s my Emmy?”
Naturally, Dr. Phil, winner of two Daytime Emmy Awards, showed up with some sage advice for the actors.
“You are forever gonna be the last pig under the gate if all you do is sit around and whine without action,” Dr. Phil said. “If you want an Emmy, get yourself booked on Ted Lasso or The Crown, that’s what you gotta do. Action.”
