Jay-Z Has A 9-Minute Song With D’Angelo On ‘The Book Of Clarence’ Soundtrack
Jay-Z and D’Angelo are both set to end their respective musical hiatuses.
During a panel discussion on Saturday (Jan. 6), The Book Of Clarence writer-director Jeymes Samuel confirmed to moderator Elliott Wilson and the intimate crowd that the Brooklyn-bred rapper and the southern crooner have a new “nine minute and 33 seconds” collaboration on the upcoming soundtrack.
Samuel described the record as “soulful, biblical bliss.” He added that the song was “so deep.” It, alongside the film, is slated for release on Friday, Jan. 12.
D’Angelo’s last release was 2019’s “Unshaken,” which followed 2014’s Black Messiah. Meanwhile, Hov hasn’t released solo music since 2017’s 4:44.
When speaking with Gayle King back in October, he spoke about his music break, confessing that only “something important” would get him back in the studio.
“I don’t wanna just make a bunch of tunes,” said the father of three. “That’s not gonna serve me, and it won’t feed me, first of all… I have to be saying something important. It has to mean something, you know? It has to mean something to a larger society.”
“Hallelujah Heaven” was the first single made available from The Book Of Clarence soundtrack. It was composed by Samuel and performed by Lil Wayne, Buju Banton and Shabba Ranks.
The Harder They Fall director shared in a statement, “There was never a question as to whether I would compose the score and write and perform on the soundtrack, as well as write and direct the movie — it was all one amazing journey where one depended on the other.”
The soundtrack will also include music from Kid Cudi, Adekunle Gold, Jorja Smith, Yemi Alade, and more.
