Jeffrey Dean Morgan rescues Jack and Diane, a donkey and emu in love, who will live out their days together on his farm

Jack and Diane — an emu and donkey who made headlines because they are in love — made their way to their new home Tuesday on Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s farm.

The Walking Dead star adopted the pair, which were found abandoned on a Kershaw, S.C., farm last month along with a menagerie of other animals. Jack the donkey and Diane the emu were taken in by the Carolina Waterfowl Rescue near Charlotte, N.C., but handlers quickly realized that they didn’t like being apart after they had bonded in the same enclosure; the Charlotte Observer reported that the 5-foot-5 donkey “started crying” and the 6-foot-tall emu “got frantic” from being apart. So the rescue group took to social media to try to find them a new home together, and Morgan offered to give them a home on the Hudson Valley, N.Y., property he shares with his actress wife, Hilarie Burton, and their children. The animals were transferred on Tuesday afternoon.

“We made it,” the animal rescue group posted on its Facebook page, along with a video of Morgan walking Jack across the grounds of his sprawling property. When one commenter remarked that Morgan should “take it slow” with the animal, the organization replied, “He was a natural with the animals. He manages Jack all by himself, and it took 4 of us to get him loaded at the rescue. They are in good hands.”

A staffer for the Carolina Waterfowl Rescue named Rebecca Biles-Davis, who apparently made the trip, wrote that Morgan “actually has other donkeys and Jack took right to him!”

Staffers called Morgan and Burton “amazing people.”

Morgan posted on Twitter that he’ll share photos of the pair once they are settled.

The connection between the TV star and the rescue group was made on Twitter last month.

While there was an overwhelming response to the plea to find the pair a home together, Jennifer Gordon, founder of the nonprofit, told the Observer, “It was clear [Morgan] is an animal lover and his farm was fabulous.” She also felt he had good intentions. “We had a lot of people trying to capitalize on the publicity of the story, and we were really concerned that they would end up in the wrong hands. I strongly felt that by allowing Jeffrey Dean Morgan to adopt them that it would take the publicity fear off the table. He definitely doesn’t need to adopt an animal to get publicity, and so I knew that would not be his motive in giving them a home.”

For the record, Gordon didn’t know Morgan was a TV star at first. “I had to ask who that was,” she told the paper. I don’t really watch a lot of television. I definitely knew who he was when I saw the picture.” However, she added, “I have seen episodes of The Walking Dead.”

Gordon also talked about the relationship between the animal pair, describing them as a romantic couple. “They like to cuddle and even sleep together,” she said. “Where one goes, the other follows.”

The emu and donkey lovebirds weren’t the only ones left behind on the farm when it abruptly shuttered. The rescue group, which is currently fundraising for a larger facility, also took in dogs, cats and chickens.
