Jenn Tran's Shocking 'Bachelorette' Finale Ends Like No Season Ever Before
Jenn Tran chose her final man on tonight’s Season 21 finale of The Bachelorette.
But all didn’t go as planned in the first Asian American franchise’s star’s search for love!
As Parade.com previously reported, at the end of last week’s Men Tell All special, Jenn had sent Jonathon Johnson packing, leaving her with final two guys: Devin Strader and Marcus Schoberg.
Devin appeared to be head over heels for Jenn after fantasy suites, declaring his love and making a special trip to Jenn’s Hawaii hotel room to get her to return the sentiment.
Jenn told him, “Devin, I do love you, you freaking idiot!” and he said “I love you” to her again.
Host Jesse Palmer had told viewers Jenn’s finale would be one of the “most surprising” endings in the history of the show.
As the dramatic three-hour finale unfolded, it became clear that Palmer was not leading viewers on—although Devin may have been!
Devin met with jeweler Neil Lane and picked out a stunning oval-cut diamond engagement ring. But Jenn told Jesse she was not going to let Devin propose. Instead, she was going to propose to Devin.
The live Los Angeles audience gasped at the news of a Bachelor Nation first.
Just as viewers expected to see an emotional proposal on the romantic beaches of Hawaii, Jesse interrupted and suddenly said from the studio that he wasn't going to air Jenn's proposal to Devin. He wanted to talk to her first.
After a commercial break, Jenn rejoined Jesse and couldn't stop crying.
"We had left Hawaii engaged. I thought I'd found the person I'd spend the rest of my life with," she said, sobbing.
"And then...as soon as we had left Hawaii, things were different. It felt like he was pulling away."
Jenn said Devin was inconsistent and wasn't calling or texting regularly.
Then he called her and broke off the engagement, she told the host and live audience, crying.
"He said he didn't love me anymore...he regretted getting engaged," Jenn revealed.
Jenn said Devin wouldn't go to couple's counseling or fight for the relationship. He had said he'd felt pressured into engagement.
The last time they had seen each other had been more than a month ago in The Bachelorette's "happy couple" house, Jenn said
When Jenn's former fiancé joined her in front of the live studio audience, the physician assistant wanted answers.
"What I can't understand is everything you did after you broke our engagement, ending the engagement in a phone call," she said.
Shortly after their breakup, Devin followed Bachelor alum Maria Georgas on Instagram and went clubbing in New York with fellow Bachelorette competitor Jeremy Simon!
Devin couldn't excuse it, noting, "I know how much that hurt you."
"I failed you," he told her. "Everything I felt for you was real."
But Jenn said he also went to New York and went clubbing with fellow Bachelorette competitor Jeremy Simon!
"You hid all these feelings of doubt," Jenn said.
Devin replied that he couldn't deny "what you're accusing me of."
He claimed he was honest, but "regretfully late" at letting her know.
"I know how bad this hurts."
Jenn slammed him, "No you don't!" She said she'd wanted a family with him.
"You don't even feel anything...my heart is broken!" Jenn told Devin.
The freight company owner said, "How can I say that I'm sorry more?"
"I watched this beautiful girl grow and flourish on her own. I found myself not being able to live up to the things you need and deserve," he said as Jenn cried.
She rolled her eyes as he said he'd watched her grow.
Devin admitted Jenn had done nothing wrong.
Jesse said her love story didn't evolve the way she'd wanted, but "you showed us what a strong and powerful woman is."
The audience cheered!
What happened in The Bachelorette finale proposal?
With Jenn's permission, cameras returned to Hawaii, showing her heartfelt proposal to Devin.
"I feel empowered," Jenn told cameras as Devin approached her.
The studio feed showed Jenn wiping away tears as she and Devin, now split up, watched their Hawaii happy ending.
He held her hands in front of the Hawaii altar and told her he loved her.
"I can't let you propose to me," she said.
"I've decided to choose myself in this journey and...I don't want to live without you...I want to wake up and choose you every day for the rest of my life." she said, as he laughed.
"So, Devin Strader, will you marry me?" she said, offering HIM a ring.
"Absolutely," he said, putting on the ring and kissing her.
Devin then proposed to Jenn, getting down on one knee with his Neil Lane ring.
They kissed and looked happy, but it wasn't to last.
Jenn was still crying as cameras returned to the studio. Jesse said, "You really did do things your way."
She concluded that she was proud of herself and didn't regret proposing to Devin. However, "that man doesn't exist anymore [but] I'm still that same woman I am...ready to fight for love."
Devin still claimed he loved her but "fell short."
"I hope that you learn the weight of your word matters," Jenn told him sadly. "I hope that you get there one day."
How many times has Bachelorette ended without engagement?
This is only the second time in Bachelorette history that the season has ended without a proposal. Ironically, the other bachelorette who ended up alone was also named Jen—Jen Schefft. In Season 3, both suitors proposed but the OG Jen refused both suitors—one on the series and the other on the After the Final Rose special.

What happened when Devin met the family?
Devin arrived and was “super scared” to meet Jenn’s family group.
He told them he grew up with a single mom and Jenn stressed that they connected by both having non-traditional families.
Jenn’s aunt and mom met Devin privately and Lylan asked him if he’d dated an Asian girl before.
Devin laughed no but said in general, Jenn “makes me feel seen. I’m 100 percent myself” with her.
Jenn told her mother in a private chat, “He wants to understand me,” but Trinh wondered if he knew Vietnamese culture.
Jenn stressed he wanted to learn more.
Her stern mom replied, “I think you need more time to understand each other.”
When Devin sat down with Jenn’s brother, James said he was protective and wanted what was best for her.
Devin stressed, “I’m confident in us.”
“She makes me so happy. I would love to have your blessing.”
But James wouldn’t give Devin his blessing—yet. He said he needed to talk to Marcus first.
Devin came away from the encounter worried about how wary her family was.
Jenn reassured him when they came back together, telling Devin, “I love you.”
What happened when Marcus met Jenn’s family?
James was concerned that Marcus was the typical “emotionally unavailable” type that she has previously chosen in her life.
He didn’t like that Marcus hadn’t told Jenn he loved her yet.
Marcus told Jenn’s family his biography of being an army ranger veteran who was wounded. James complained to cameras that he’d been wanting to hear more about his relationship with his sister!
James was even more skeptical after talking to Marcus, who merely said that Jenn made him believe commitment was possible.
Marcus then admitted to Jenn’s aunt that he wasn’t in love with Jenn but thought he could “get there.”
Jenn’s mom sighed, “You’re not ready for engagement.”
James told Jenn in their sit-down that Marcus was holding back.
The pretty physician's assistant admitted that her guy could “be giving more” but his slower style was okay with her.
“How long are you willing to wait?” James asked bluntly.
Jenn wasn’t sure and her brother cried.
Jenn then asked Marcus when they were alone, “How do you see this ending for us?”
Again, he stammered and couldn’t be specific, leaving Jenn confused.
How did Jenn’s final date with Devin go?
Jenn met Devin on the beach for a spiritual ceremony on the beach with shamans chanting.
The freight company owner was suddenly plagued with doubt.
They had to find rocks and release their fear by throwing the rocks into the ocean, then sharing a healing dip together.
Devin admitted to Jenn he’d felt scared because of his past. But she said she understood him and they cuddled.
During the night part of their date, Devin gave Jenn a special gift—a necklace with a green stone he’d received from a shaman. The gift from the time of his first one-on-one date with Jenn meant commitment to her.
“Devin keeps blowing me away,” The Bachelorette, 26, raved to cameras.
What happened on Jenn’s last date with Marcus?
Before Marcus met Jenn, host Jesse spoke to him. Marcus admitted part of him loved Jenn but he still felt “torn.”
Jesse said if he did love Jenn, he needed to tell her or risk losing her.
She took things into her own hands by forcing a chat with Marcus in his hotel room.
They were supposed to have a date, but Jenn said, “We’re running out of time. I don’t know if you see me in your future.”
With both getting teary-eyed, Marcus regretted not “diving deeper…it’s scary to me.”
The army ranger veteran said that he was struggling with their relationship but “you make me want to keep trying.”
Jenn told him she’d invested a lot but his holding back was hurting her.
“Sorry,” Marcus replied. Finally, he said, “I know that I love you. I want to give it a try. I don’t want to give up on us.”
Emotionally overwhelmed Jenn excused herself.
“I’m sick and tired of investing so much time and energy in someone who doesn’t feel the same way,” she fumed in confessional.
When she returned to Marcus’ side, he said, “I did fall in love with you,” but felt unable “to live up to” what Jenn needed.
Jenn opined that she’d given too much to him. “I’m just done,” she sighed, indicating it was over between them.
Jenn hugged Marcus goodbye and he cried on his hotel room balcony.
Cameras switched to the studio where the eliminated Marcus was sitting with Jesse.
“I wanted it to be me…I wasn’t living up to what she said she needed,” Marcus told Jesse.
“I needed to get out of her way.”
What did Jenn and Marcus say to each other in the studio?
Jenn and Marcus hashed things through and wished each other well.
“It was an honor to be part of this journey,” he told The Bachelorette star.
Jenn told Jesse that there “was something deep down that wasn’t right” between her and Marcus.
She also realized Devin was more in her heart.
Marcus reiterated, “I loved you enough to get out of your way.”
Jenn breaking up with him “was the correct thing to do,” he concluded.
