Jennifer Lopez shut out of the Oscars for 'Hustlers' role

Jennifer Lopez said she wasn’t going to wake up early for Monday’s Academy Awards nominations — and it was for the best as the Hustlers star was snubbed.

While the superstar earned Golden Globe, SAG and Critics' Choice nominations for her role as a savvy stripper in the crime drama — and oddsmakers predicted she would be a nominee for Best Supporting Actress — she was omitted from the list. The nominees in the category are Kathy Bates for Richard Jewell, Laura Dern for Marriage Story, Scarlett Johannson for Jojo Rabbit, Florence Pugh for Little Women and Margot Robbie for Bombshell.

Hustlers — about a group of exotic dancers who turn the tables on their wealthy Wall Street clientele after the 2008 recession — opened in September to $33.2 million, the highest opening of Lopez’s career and she earned rave reviews for her performance. As of Friday, the website Sports Betting Dime pegged Lopez as having the second-best chance at winning an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress — behind Dern. Similarly, Gold Derby had her in the top three.

But Lopez wasn’t getting hooked on the hype. Over the weekend, she told Entertainment Tonight that while being nominated for all these awards is “a big thrill ride” and something she’s “really flattered” about, she wouldn’t be waking up at the crack of dawn to watch the Academy Award nominations live and see if she was among the nominees.

"No, no, no. No. No,” she said. “Call me when it's over.”

She added that even if she didn’t get a nomination, she has "nothing to complain about” — well, “except a few sore muscles” from her rehearsals for the Super Bowl halftime show, which she is headlining. “I mean, my life right now is just so amazing. My personal life, my kids, everything. Everything's just in a great place, and I feel really lucky."

Lopez said in November that she “didn’t get paid a whole bunch of money” upfront for the Hustlers. Instead, “I did it for free and produced it,” collecting money off of its backend success. She said the film “became a movement... It's all women producers, woman director, woman writer, all women starring in it. We've been watching men take advantage of women in movies for a long time, so it was a fun ride to see the tables turned."

The Academy Awards will air Feb. 9 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
