Jeremy Allen White Wins Emmy for Best Actor in a Comedy Series Two Years in a Row for ‘The Bear’
Jeremy Allen White has won the 2024 Emmy for Best Actor in a Comedy Series for Season 2 of “The Bear,” marking back to back wins in the category for the 33-year-old actor.
The FX on Hulu show reached new heights of acclaim in Season 2, with IndieWire’s Ben Travers calling White’s performance “a magnetic turn.” When “The Bear” debuted in 2022, it instantly elevated the actor to the highest echelons of Hollywood after having spent 10 years and 134 episodes on “Shameless.” Something about his soulful chef, Carmy, instantly connected with viewers and landed him one of the lead roles in 2023 wrestling drama “The Iron Claw.” Carmy’s one of those great tormented characters: Full of doubt, and coming from a fractious background, but aspiring to the absolute heights of his field. Having worked in New York and Copenhagen as a chef he returned to his family sandwich shop, The Beef, in Chicago to take over following the suicide of his brother, Michael (Jon Bernthal).

“The Bear” casting director Jeanie Bacherach told IndieWire’s Proma Khosla about how she cast White in the role: “I can’t say it was a find because he was on ‘Shameless,’ but before the show was picked up to pilot I came on board with Chris and Joanna and other producers to put together almost like a look book, a pitch to get it over the line at FX to have them move forward. That was about helping them to sort of see what this ensemble could be and who these characters were, so we put together kind of five ideas for each of the roles with pictures and actors’ resumes and character descriptions. Jeremy was part of that initial group, but we all went into it thinking he’d be incredible but he’s probably not gonna want to go to another series, he’s just finishing a long run, it’s Chicago, maybe too many similarities. So we continued to talk about people with Jeremy always like the little angel right on your shoulder, because we didn’t want to fall in love with Jeremy too soon because we just weren’t sure it was going to work. There were other people talked about and explored, but Jeremy was the one. Can’t imagine otherwise.”
“The Bear” came into the Primetime Emmy Awards September 15 having already won seven awards at the Creative Arts Emmys, including guest actor Emmys for Jon Bernthal and Jamie Lee Curtis, who both appeared in the episode “Fishes,” about Carmy’s extremely difficult family.
