Jesse Williams helps Ben & Jerry's tackle 'systemic racism' with new ice cream flavor: 'Sweet taste of justice'
Grey’s Anatomy actor Jesse Williams almost never made it to Grey Sloan Memorial hospital. He originally wanted to be a civil rights attorney.
Instead, he uses some of his influence as the star of the popular, long-running show to bring attention to the issue. For instance, he’s a member of the board of directors for civil rights organization Advancement Project, which has partnered with Ben & Jerry’s ice cream to launch the flavor Justice ReMix’d.
Proceeds from sales of the flavor, available at U.S. grocery stores and at Ben & Jerry’s ice cream shops, will benefit Advancement Project’s legal advocacy work on issues such as voter ID laws and Black Lives Matter. Justice ReMix’d is Ben & Jerry’s way of “expanding its commitment to addressing systemic racism in our country,” according to a press release.
Williams shared a video on Instagram describing the project’s importance to him.
“Growing up in Chicago in the hood and seeing how much poverty is criminalized and how expensive it is to be broke,” Williams said, “and it is just simply not experienced in white suburbia.”
He said he considers civil right attorneys to be “heroes, social justice ninjas” who are “changing society every day.”
He added, “Together, we can transform the system to deliver justice for all instead of justice for some.”
Williams’s fans applauded the cause, but they were equally taken with the drool-inducing flavor, which sounds intense... and intensely delicious. It features two flavors of ice cream, cinnamon and chocolate, with gobs of cinnamon bun dough and spicy fudge brownies mixed throughout.
“Ice cream and social justice ?!!! This might be the best collab EVAAAA,” one commenter raved.
Another said, “I'm gonna have to go get me some of that to show my support! Wish it came with you though, I'd buy the store out!”
Someone else called Williams “my hero”: “Someone with your platform using their gift for good and to change peoples lives is an inspiration. Thank you.”
