Jimmy Carter celebrating 100th birthday with benefit concert in Atlanta. Here's who will play

Former President Jimmy Carter is having a birthday a century in the making.

In honor of his 100th birthday, the Fox Theatre in Atlanta will hold "Jimmy Carter 100: A Celebration in Song," on Sept. 17, a couple weeks before his Oct. 1 birthday. It's a benefit concert with the proceeds going to the Carter Center, a nonprofit organizing focused on addressing national and international issues of public policy.

The concert will feature former Grammy-winning country artist Maren Morris, Allman Brothers and Rolling Stones member Chuck Leavell, DJ and rapper D-Nice, Athens-based rock band Drive-By Truckers, Grammy-nominated country artist Eric Church, alt-rock band Grouplove, Grammy-nominated country duo War And Treaty, and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.

There will also be some celebrity guest appearances such as Oscar-winning actor Sean Penn, rapper and activist Killer Mike, and former Atlanta Braves star Dale Murphy. The Carter Center said in its online news release that more artists and presenters will be announced in the near future.

“Whether it was on his record player, on the campaign trail, or on the White House lawn, music has been – and continues to be – a source of joy, comfort, and inspiration for my grandfather,” said Jason Carter, Carter’s grandson and chair of the Carter Center Board of Trustees. “I can think of no better way to celebrate him and his 100th birthday than a night of music.”

The center is also celebrating Carter’s birthday with the crowd-building of a new digital mosaic from images, videos, and messages sent in by the public. Those interested in contributing can do so at CarterCenter.org/JimmyCarter100.

Tickets for the concert will be available to the public starting at 10 a.m. Aug. 5 for $100 (excluding taxes and fees). They will be available at FoxTheatre.org/JimmyCarter100.
