Jodie Sweetin Weighs in on Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony Following Candace Cameron Bure's Critique
Jodie Sweetin is speaking out against critics of the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony—including her former Full House co-star Candace Cameron Bure.
Bure called the drag show "disgusting" on Saturday, saying it “completely blasphem[ed] and mock[ed] the Christian faith” with what she believed to be a re-creation of the Last Supper. But the performance wasn't actually meant to reference the Last Supper at all, as it turned out.
As Page Six reported, Sweetin shared a post by activist Matt Bernstein to her Instagram stories on Sunday explaining that "the drag queens at the Olympics were recreating the feast of Dionysus" in a nod to the Greek gods of Mount Olympus.
“And even if you thought it was a Christian reference—what’s the harm?” the post asked. “Why is it a ‘parody’ and not a tribute? Can drag queens not be Christian too?”
Sweetin also shared a video of comedian Walter Masterson explaining the performance’s original inspiration, writing over the footage: “Tell me you don’t know about art or history without TELLING me you don’t know about art or history.”
This isn't the first time Sweetin and Bure have been divided on an issue. In 2022, Bure unfollowed Sweetin on Instagram after she defended JoJo Siwa against Bure’s anti-LGBTQ+ comments about “traditional marriage.”
The next year, Sweetin said she was “disappointed” when one of her independent films was sold to Bure’s Great American Family network without her knowledge.
